As an 18 year old that was "Unschooled" his whole life, I can safely say that this an extremely unethical way to raise children. Now days I struggle with learning disabilities and I'm slow to process information. Along with that, trying to socialize is extremely stressful for me even among friends and family, thus it is very hard for me to form connections properly. I beg any parent that sees this not to do this to your kids, don't let them end up as fucked up as me.

I felt like my parents were strict when I was a kid and hated the rules and other students bugged me, but now I’m grateful for all of it. I learned social skills, learned to follow the rules, how to manage my time and keep track of my responsibilities. Im grateful they decided to not go with this parenting method-I don’t even think this was a thing when I was a kid, or at least not as mainstream…I have goals and plans and I wouldn’t have been able to take steps toward and do had I been “unschooled”. It actually worked out really well and the kids who graduated actually cared about (and had) a well rounded education. Kids definitely still need structure, discipline and to learn to handle being told no. But maybe our public school system could use a bit more balance between just learning to be good test takers and nurturing a child's interests.

I was homeschooled and we got to explore a lot of our interests. We spent a lot of time working on our own projects. But that was not the core of our education, not by far. We had to do a lot of structured academic work. My mom's approach was unconventional, but critical thinking skills and typical academic standards were at the heart of it. She wanted us to want to learn, and to know how to govern our own intellectual journeys towards whatever successes we desired. My heart breaks when I see families like this who intentionally rob their children of education in any form. Because that's what she's doing. They will not be equipped to make anything out of their "interests" without first catching up on fundamentals they would have been better off learning as kids.

My husband is a public high school teacher and he frequently has to teach students things they’ve not previously learnt for various reasons. One of the hardest things teachers have to overcome is trying to teach children who come from homes where rules are not enforced and where the parents fail to engage in their children’s education. It’s so very frustrating for him because he works long hours-evenings and weekends grading papers and writing lesson plans, but if a kid’s family doesn’t place a priority on education, then it makes his job harder. Of course, everyone blames the instructors instead of the homes lives of some of these kids.

I agree with he fact that many of the things the school system teaches is unnecessary, especially in older grades, but I dont agree with this video. Most of the things children learn in elementary and middle school are very important in the real world, and the things they learn in high school are important if they want a career in that subject. My school follows a British education system, where at grade 9/year 10, students choose 5 subjects, along with english and math, they want to study in the next 2 years. And then at grade 11/year 12 we choose 3 subjects to study until we graduate. I like this because we still learn all the essentials, but we also have some choice in what we learn.
@lexilovesjesus91293 жыл бұрын
My school has similar electives like that too. We also have the choice in 11th and 12th grade to go to another trade school that focuses on what you want to do in college half the day. It's good preparation.

My child was very confident and happy prior to starting school. I see a change in her spirits now that she’s in kindergarten. She’s had a hard time interacting with kids who were not very nice, getting up early , etc. As much as it breaks my heart , i know she NEEDS this. My job is not to make things easier for her or indulge her. My job is to expose her to as many people and situations as possible and be right there to support her, teach her right from wrong and guide her so when she’s an adult she can handle it in her own. We added extra curricular activities to build confidence. You can’t just deprive your child of opportunities, of the ability to be a functioning adult. Even if they choose to be completely off grid someday, there are still chores and responsibilities, they will still have to deal with hard things in life. This is child neglect in my opinion.

@mynameisreallycool15 ай бұрын
You're a good parent. Plus, kids sometimes need a little time to adjust anyway. Your child will get used to getting up early eventually, and if you teach your kid how to avoid, ignore, or stand up towards bullies, that will be more beneficial than using it as an excuse to isolate your child from the world, because people will face bullies anywhere at any time of their lives anyway. Depriving kids of their social life and education just because you're too impatient to let them get used to it just seems very stupid, and even a little selfish, because I think most of these parents know deep down that letting them learn through experience while they're young will prepare them for the real world, but they care more about not feeling discomfort at the moment than they do about their kid facing it later on when the parent is no longer responsible for them. I had a hard time in first grade due to getting bullied by kids and having a mean teacher at the time, but I stayed, and I'm glad I did. If my mom pulled me out of school, I would've missed out on all the good things about school and wouldn't have made as many friends. School has some downsides, but there are upsides too, and a lot of people take that for granted.

Yep. People who don’t at least know basic numbers and how to understand and read a language end up nowhere. They can’t even get a job as a trash collector or a fast food chef. I’ve met adults that grew up without rules and they are frustrated people. One was my former neighbor nice enough person but just didn’t understand rules. He got evicted from his apartment because he thought he didn’t have to follow basic guidelines and couldn’t cope. It’s a disservice to the children. I’m all for kids being kids and enjoying themselves and learning on their own but there has to be some sense of order or else they grow up to be lost as adults.

Maya Strizheus You’re absolutely correct. However, I feel that this was a bad example of unschooling. The articles I’ve read could be sugar coating it, of course, but I still plan to unschool my children. What they need to know is how to do taxes, write checks, etc., they don’t need to know half of what is covered in public school math. If my child were exposed to the appropriate amount of careers (as I really hope the children shown in this video are) and for example one wanted to pursue architecture, he or she should absolutely learn the math and skills to later pursue that. This house does seem chaotic, though, and for the most part they don’t really seem to be learning... this could be done better. My point is, unschooling could still be done successfully.

They also might not learn crucial ELA skills due to the fact that their mother and father don't force them to learn anything that they don't want to. Also, they need to learn some basic math skills. If these kids don't know how to do certain things mathwise, then they definitely will not be successful. The one kid seems to be really good with cooking. And she says in regards to algebra that people aren't all on this planet to do the same thing, but the thing about kids is they don't know what they'll need later in life and need to be equipped with the basics to get them into anything they might want to pursue. If one kid doesn't like algebra today, that doesn't mean he won't want to work a job that needs it down the line, but he won't have the basics at that point and it'll be much harder to learn.

@JohnDoe-tt6en5 жыл бұрын
In an absolutely perfect world no one would have to learn or do anything they weren't interested in but I agree that this isn't conductive to their long-term happiness. I don't have a bad opinion of the parents, though. I respect their out of the box thinking. I'd like it if a lot of the attitudes about childhood and life and society were radically changed on widescale. It doesn't seem like the long-term consequences of this, in some cases, are necessarily as bad as I immediately assumed. If I had children I would want to raise them with a balance between the kind of freedom they have and structure, rules, learning to delay instant gratification and non-violent discipline.

lil egg no, you have to prepare them for the next school day helping them with hw, making sure they’re engaged in their classes, have all the things they need, getting up early each morning, picking them up after a long day, and actually paying in some way for their education and not hoarding all the money for themselves. So sending kids to school is not “lazy” for the vast majority of parents, it’s cause they actually care about the kids future rather than let their child do whatever they want bc they’re scared to tell them no
@lilegg3014 жыл бұрын
@@bobsburgers8497 - ngl it's still minimal effort especially when the kids grow up. that's what i'm saying, you don't need to spend that much effort to send your child to an actual school. if you didn't realise, i'm still actually criticising those parents because it doesn't take much effort really for them to have their kids live a normal life when they're already doing some of the things you said.

lil egg how the hell is sending your kids to school lazy? Parents work when their kids are at school. And I can tell you if they do after school activities like sports or band then they have to work way harder. Parents have to make sure their kids homework gets done, make sure they are in bed on time and wake up on time, and most parents help kids study for tests. Sea Otter Productions -- That statement shocked me as well. Do those kids never have to take exams and meet government curriculum milestones? Where was this video done? In Canada you can homeschool your kids, but they have to take standardized tests at Grades 3, 6, 9 and 12 to make sure they are keeping up with their schooled peers. You can't just let your kids run wild and only study what they like - what kid would ever CHOOSE to do Math or Physics if they didn't have to?!! I just got the sense all the way through this video that the parents are just mega--lazy when it comes to educating their kids. They take a field trip to a weather station and don't learn a single thing. The mother just reads the cue cards that come with each display while the kids are running wild at the other end of the room. They learned absolutely nothing on that trip.

I would never forgive my parents if this is how they brought me up. Many people as saying there are many people without degrees that are so successful. Yes this maybe true but how many successful people do you hear of that haven't even been though a primary or secondary school education. This mother is setting the up for failure as how many employers are there that are willing to hire someone who hasn't been taught basic maths or are ignorant to many aspects of life. Not only this but they are almost depriving the children in experiences. Making friends are limited due to the lack of opportunity to do so as well has having a hard time relating. Additionally, where is the resilience that learn from having to soldier through hard times such as exams. Send your kids to school it allows more opportunities in life and it will be much easier when they are older. They might come to resent you if you deprive them of this.
@olleybear6 жыл бұрын
Just out of curiosity, how much of any exam you took in high school do you still remember today? How much of those subjects you hated and were forced to 'learn' do you use in your job today? Going to guess that your answer, like most if they are being honest, is near zero. The reality is people dont need more than a 4th grade education to thrive in society. For the most part school isnt about learning. Its about memorization. How many college educated idiots have you come across in your life? More than a few right? And those idiots arent idiots because they have bad memories. They are idiots because they dont have any common sense. The most important thing a child can learn is how money works. Learning that money is more than just something to spend is one of the most important lessons anyone can learn in life and yet most people dont get taught in school anything about money. So, after all that has been typed here, how useful is school really?

Yeah Same sometimes school is a bad environment for learning and making friends. Many kids get bullied in school. In school, you are forced to learn things you have no interest in and end up forgetting anyway. Almost every student in school ends up hating learning and reading by the time they graduate, and so they never choose to read outside of what's required for school. The friends made are often very fake and only continue the friendship for selfish reasons like using people for popularity. How many of our high school friends still keep in touch now that we're adults? Probably not many. Just shows how shallow those friendships were. Kids can be socialized without school. Compulsory school didn't exist forever in human history, and yet humans still managed to socialize just fine. They also managed to learn just fine too. Otherwise we wouldn't still exist as a species.
