I always try to plan a trip using a paper map or atlas first. The biggest reason is LARGE Cities. I hate going through them and will go out of my way to avoid them where possible. What I do is, after picking the route on the map, enter the destination on the GPS. When the Map route and GPS route don't agree I put in 'way-points' along the route till the GPS route lines up with the Map route. And thanks for the recommendation of the Motor Carriers' Road Atlas... might be just what I need.

I’ve used it a few time and also didn’t like that it forces you to use your location as your starting point. But I noticed today you can delete your location as the starting point once you have two other points on the map. Makes it easier to plan future routes.

But for those of us who don't want wifi sniffing and Bluetooth scanning enabled, this is a deal killer. Thanks for the review anyhow, looked promising.

I like to use truck map in conjunction with Google maps or a GPS to plot my route in advance, because sometimes truckmap can take a longer route than necessary . I like the fact that truckmap will follow routes that have the most truck stop access, avoid low bridges, and tight corners. It's a good tool to have in my arsenal of travel apps.

Boy am I behind the times. The wife and I traveled a ton in an Avalanche with a car hauler with the hotrod and did it for years with just the atlas and never got lost...not once. BUT, we did hit weather unexpectedly and traffic backups out of the blue....close calls at times as well. So we thought we were hot snot when we got a cell phone and could Google map thing and even hotter when we found the weather channel app. So now we really like waze as it does like you mentioned, the lane one should be in. That saves a lot as now we are anywhere from 59 to 68 feet long. Hitting Nashville and trying to stay with 24 to i65 gave very short time to go 6 lanes across for a left split exit coming in from the right. Anyway, we are taking this video to heart as having the weather at a glance on the gps map is sweet. I have to plan the route and est when we will be where and switch apps to see what each hourly forecast calls for AND hope we stay on the estimate. I didn't hear anything about pop up ads or data gathering from the app....any news on that end? Thanks for the video ...even if I am behind the times. LOL

Hey, I've been playing with app and am really confused because when I put in a route, say, from my home to a campground 3 hours away, it takes me over a very mountainous road (I live here and already know NOT to go that way) but if I didn't live here, I would get hung up on this road. Shouldn't this Trucker App know NOT to take a rig that direction? There are much straighter roads it could have picked. This bothers me because once we are in areas we know nothing about, we would follow what it tells us and that is scary! I see you touched on this a bit at the end. We enjoy your videos, thank you!

Thank you, dedicated units are good for that. When I was testing if I put it in Airplane mode after the route is setup and navigating the GPS continues to function. It just wouldn't be able to recalculate or find new points. So most the time I don't notice when we loose service while driving.

@AllAboutRVs4 жыл бұрын
Yes ours works the same but when we use the phone for music and navigation it’s the difference between music volume and navigation volume. The music will decrease when it cuts to navigation but the truck map is quite in relation to music volume setting. Google maps has a way to increase output of volume in app so it is balanced with music level. I hope that makes sense

I am a local RV user. Most of my trips with our RV are within 3-4 hours from home. I know most of the routes by heart don't really need a GPS. However, I do make regular long road trips, sometimes over 1,000 km (600 miles) in a single day. I have yet to find an App that I like. I prefer a actual GPS. The primary reason is where my phone sits on my dash. My GPS site high and I can glance at it without taking my eyes off the road. Secondly, my long trips are often into the US (I'm Canadian) and therefore I don't have cell service (wifi only) once I cross the border. I also like the way I can create WAY POINTS and select my route. I am using a Garmin and when I get to my exit, it will show the signs, lanes and an actual picture of the Interstate exit. I am looking for a GPS that give me greater control of the date that is displayed. I'm a number person, so I am looking for more info.

With regard to knowing when you're going to lose your lane, on most highways, the lane stripes will change from long stripes to short stripes when the lane is going to end. My wife was driving and I mentioned that she needed to get over because she was going to lose her lane. Sure enough, the lane ended and she thought I was a genius. Then I let her in on the secret.

Fyi when you are on your final strech to destination look for a address to see if its even or odd because no matter what evens and odds are always on the exact same side so you should always know which side of the street your destination is. Do we put in the length of the trailer or the total length both of the travel trailer and the tow vehicle? Does this app show all the various campgrounds? I just installed this app and it's not so easy to change a route to the roads i prefer. It also didn't send me on the Garden State Parkway after going west from getting off the Tapan Zee ( now Mario Cuomo bridge) I'm pretty sure there's no problems for a travel trailer going on the Garden State Parkway all the way down to I95 southbound. I like the Copilot app. It seems much more RV user friendly. They charge 35$ a year but it's worthwhile, unless you know a free app similar or at least better than the TruckMap app you like so much. Thanks for that tip! I have turned it to airplane mode while driving and it still functions and navigates it just can't recalculate or search for points with no service. A good GPS like a Garmin RV or Trucker GPS device will give the same thing. One major flaw with the app on your phone is if there is no cell service you would not have a GPS any longer. The standalone GPS uses Satellites not cell towers. They can also provide the weather, and traffic and can suggest a faster route when in traffic. Yes it is convenient to have one device but it is not a cure all
@AllAboutRVs4 жыл бұрын
I agree it's not perfect but it actually continues to navigate when we drop service for a while after the route is set up and navigating, the GPS continues to function. It just wouldn't be able to recalculate or find new points without service. So most of the time I don't notice when we lose service while driving. The positioning on the phone is from the same satellites the stand-alone GPS uses for positioning and the app appears to cache a fair bit of the route map so it continues as normal for us when cell service drops out.
