A local subscriber gave us a free 350 Chevrolet engine hoping we could use it. The story was that they had it running in a mud truck and replaced it with a more powerful engine. Mostly stock internals being used in a way that cooling isn't optimal, buzzed to a relatively high rpm, and momentary oil starvation as the truck slams around. The amazing part is it still ran, heh... Might be able to sleeve that one lifter bore to salvage the block.

What a great time exploring an engine with someone with Mojo's knowledge and experience. It's ALWAYS a fun time tearing down a blown or even not a blown motor.. and to do it with a legend like Mojo.. The Super Scraper exceeded my expectations. I assumed a robust putty knife I didn't realize it had that nice carbide edge on it at a really useful angle. I just used it to get some stubborn crud off of a cast iron pan I've been working on restoring and it is amazing how well that thing works it's nice and flat and doesn't gouge because it's machined so straight across.

He probably got it in a mud hole and got a bunch of muddy water full of dirt and sand in the crankcase. Filter probably plugged up and bypassed and the sand just polished the bearings away. This happened to a friend’s 6.5 diesel we had just rebuilt.

This may have been one of those engines that come from the factory with .009 under size brgs on the rods, possibly mains also.

I suspect the crank was as loose as the rods that were too loose on the crank to spin. The part number on that oil pump might be the thing to know about it lol. When should we start painting the cinder blocks orange and calling them safety blocks?? I'm for it.

Despite the engine being almost total junk. Mojo's attitude remains calm and happy. Can't find workers like these anymore. I believe the crack around the lifter has to do with a very bad valve adjustment, that is probably linked to the none existing seat on the exhaust valve.. From looking at the repairs looks like someone did not pay attention when assembling the engine. Not sure what the deal was or was it someone's first engine rebuild job? Who knows. Thanks for making this video and good engines seem to get harder and harder to find.

Just a friend of mine gave me a 350 4 bolt main engine he said the cam was bad I took him at word good motor. Then I bought a new cam yadda it started ran like 💩 to make a long story short 2 spun bearing on the same journal sanded the crank down replaced bearing it lasted about a year until I found a good motor. 😅

I've seen that once before when a guy slammed an engine with way too much nitrous, but it also took out the mains as well. That might also explain the crack in the lifter valley. Not sure about the valve but I know the damage can be severe because it leans the engine out extremely. Could this be the case? Thanks for the cool video fellas!

A decent machinist shop can totally fix the crack in the lifter valley. That comes from the engine being under severe stress (like in a mud boggin' truck) and it's twisting the block. As long as you're not going to be racing with it you could get that type of damage fixed. It kind of depends on how much abuse the block has taken - probably has other cracks you can't see. Just probably cheaper to just get a better block.

Like you were saying - if it were a hemi or a max wedge block or even a rat it's worth getting it checked for other cracks and repairing a crack in a lifter valley like that one had.

If you're putting a lot of stress on an engine you'll see that sort of bearing wear/abuse. I bet all of those were worn right down to that copper color.

I had a '95 Ford with a 300 6 cyl. and used it to haul wood - wore the bearings out by around 60k miles. Was just like that 350 - you could move it back and forth that same way and it's clunkin' - I left the oil pan off it for about 4 months, sold it for dirt cheap and the woman who bought it ended up putting about 100k more miles on it - all she did was put the oil pan back on it.
