Free Spanish Lessons with Maider #15 - How to tell time in Spanish

What time is it? Time to learn Spanish, but of course! This week, our favorite guru Maider teaches us how to tell the time in Spanish.
First things first - how do you ask "what time is it"?
Simple: it's just 3 words. ¿Qué hora es? Or, literally, "Which hour is?"
To answer, we use the verb to be. For example:
Es la 1 (singular)
Son las 2 (plural)
Until the clock strikes half an hour, we use the hour + "y" (and) + minutes. For example:
Es la 1 y 5.
Son las 2 y 20.
Afterwards, we use the hour + "menos" (minus) + minutes to the next hour. For example:
Son las 5 menos 25. (4:35)
Son las 5 menos 10. (4.50)
We have special words for :00, :15, :30 and :45. Pay attention to when we use 'y' and 'menos'!
Son las 4 en punto (4:00)
Son las 4 Y cuarto (4:15).
Son las 4 Y media (4:30).
Son las 4 MENOS cuarto (4:45).
But before you worry - no, we're not stuck in a world with just analog clocks! If you have a digital clock, you simply have to state the hour and the minutes. For example:
1:18. Es la una dieciocho.
3:40. Son las tres cuarenta.
