As a mostly solo player I personally do not mind that I can't do the operations/ranked PvP and the million credit cap isn't the worst thing in the world (Many cool looking items can be bought for low price). In my opinion best thing to do is to subscribe for one month (more than enough time to get to lvl 75) and see if it was worth to you to be subbed.

What I recommend for new solo players is putting in $5 at the start, then sub one month once you hit the lvl cap. You can pretty much play the whole game for only $15-20. Pretty cool deal for once, especially since it's EA lol.

@@robertowoolfolk4986 Cartel coins. The premium currency. With this you can do a lot. Usually what I do is buy authorizations, so I make the preferred experience very close to subbed. Another thing I do is if I buy something expensive, let's say a suit of armor for 10 million credits (durring subbed time). I'll spend some cartel coins so I can have that armor for all my characters. Also tip: if you link the security key to your account you will get free cartel coins every month! :) (If you take a one year break in the future and come back to the game, you will have a lot of cartel coins waiting for you in your vault) Lately the best time to use cartel coins is durring sales I hope this helps (~^-^)~

I've bene playing as a preferred player for over 5 years ! Loved the game even then but recently I decided to become a subscriber because I felt as if I was missing out on things the game has to offer. Month 2 of being a subscriber and I'm lovin it !! From the crafting, operations to the exp raise! I feel as if it's worth the money but clearly I love playing the game ! the biggest thing I missed on preferred wasn't actually the credit cap it's the artifact equipment. two ways around that. gear all your guys before you let your sub run out or get the unlock from the cartel market.

I play the game since 2015, and have only subbed during major updates, rest of the time is okay being pref you just have too look around how to deal with the restrictions, account wide purple gear unlock specially, they're not cheap when sold on the gtn but you can stack money in your legacy bank, use a referral link for a free 1 week sub time and buy it. Stuff like that. This game is really extensive even if you're not sub.

make sure if you're f2p to bank those credits in your legacy storage. don't go over 1 million. if you have a guildee that you trust and trusts you that is subscribed you can still get stuff on the gtn. you'll just have to pass them 1m at a time for those armors.

best option if you want to subscribe to get the expansions and then go preferred, is the 30 dollar option. this option gives you some cartel coins, 60 days of subscription status instead of 30, and it does not auto renew.. so you can buy and forget. this is what i usually do every few months. right now im playing preferred to see what its like. so far its just fine. i think this status is perfect for those that want to just experience the story content. only problem i have with preferred is that you only get 1 crew skill slot. that said you can unlock additional slots but its expensive. if i ever did the group content on a regular basis, i'd probably sub and go the 90 days or 6 month route. if you know you are going to play long term those are better deals in the long run. one thing to remember is that if you go the 30 dollar route, you can use your cartel coins to unlock some of the restrictions such as hide helmet, unify colors, crew skills (though this one is expensive), and purple gear.

Personally, this seems like a rather dumb content structure. It would almost undoubtedly be easier to swtich to a full FTP model, they could gate things like x2, x4 x6 speeders behind the cartel coins systems, release cosmetic items monthly and release skill effect MTX and things like this. While it's great to allow players to have access to the story content, the benefit to the game is in increasing the number of available raiding players and decreasing PVP and Raid queues. The game doesn't get to benefit from this, nor does it draw in players who want to try a nearly 10-year-old MMO. It doesn't make sense at all to drive the players you get to invest in and then hit them with level caps, movement speed caps at early levels, and item progression caps. And once you find out the ceiling in makes you not want to install the game. Because you know you're barred from the endgame... even if you only want to experience the story content. If you want to charge for expansion content, that's fine, but just increase the FTP level cap right in line. They don't get the new classes or the storyline content, but they get the items, PVP, and Multiplayer content within reason. Hardcaps in MMOs are an awful, awful idea. They leave a sour taste for potential customers. And an MMO is nothing without endgame content.

@@N4kras And that's the problem. MMOs are about raiding, grouping, friendships, relationships. This game is about leveling a bunch of alts for single-player RPG content while tolerating all of the worst aspects of the MMO model. While fans of the actual MMO content are locked in a corner charged premiums and kept away from players just here for the story. Seems like the wall is in the exact place you don't want it. And it hurts subs the worst of all. I guess in a sense the model makes perfect sense because it's a feelsbadman half-measure in a game that is basically a half-measure itself. Really shows the power of the Star Wars brand that this thing exists 10 years later.

@@targetthyself meh, MMOs really only work if people that play work together. I remember the early days of WoW...everyone was helping everyone. That was fun. MMOs today is mostly people playing solo for (usually) the story and dont really engage in endgame content like raiding or PVPing. Personally I cant stand PVP in really any game. Raiding requires set times a week and a guild that actually does stuff. My issue with this game is the complete lack of direction from the development team. Probably not their fault, its probably EA's fault. Also the game engine holds the game back. Why is it that WoW (which I havent played in 2 years) being 15 or so years older looks better than SWTOR? Why such a long time in between patches? Why such little content? Why no story? Why no continuation/completion of the latest Onslaught "expansion"?

Nope the species become locked again after you unsub. So you want to create the species while you are subscribed, so you can keep playing them even after you unsubscribe.

On preferred player: I got preferred status from just making a 250 cartel coins purchase (€2.40), so it seems like the 5$ minimum has been lifted. I briefly thought it was still there since I couldn't find a definitive answer, and my preferred status arrived several minutes later than the cartel coins themselves, so I looked it up. There I found that the 5$ restriction was initialy a bug when they introduced the 250 purchace option and forgot to enable that as a way to get preferred status. Then I relogged and found I did indeed get my preferred status after all.

I know some people would say: "Ey its just 15 bucks" But when you dont earn your money in dollars and your country currency is extremely devaluated it becames a privilege to have a sub. I guess it depends where you are base at, but 15 dollars is still not something you want to pay per month, unless you really like and want to support the product. For me, it's more about switching to subscription when there is a new expansion to unlock, or when i feel in element to play SWOTOR, once I run out of will to do so, or time. I switch back to f2p, until the next streak.

I am a level 30 something with the Jedi Knight and a level 9 with a Smuggler and all I know is that I want alien characters badly. What I am confused about (and hoping that someone here can answer) is whether subscribing before you reach the level 60 limit/3rd expansion as a pre existing character will allow you to have the rest of the expansions and higher than level 60 characters *forever* even if you *don't* finish the free to play story? I don't know if I have phrased this well at all since I am on my phone so it is clunky as heck 😄

Hi @Swtorista, you mentioned that spending $5.00 in the game will make you a preferred player. Doing that, will I be able to play the expansions ? I think being a preferred player is the perfect thing for me as it is less restrictive than f2p, I am not really into the pvp stuff of the game. Subbing for a month also makes me think that I will be pressured to play the game since I need to make out most of its benefits for just a month.

I don't recommend resubbing after letting your sub end. Once you've been subbed for a long time and you drop down to preferred status, you immediately feel how *heavy* the restrictions on you are. It steals the motivation right out of you. Suggesting you should subscribe again just so the game is no longer frustrating is not a good enough reason. Especially given the $15/mo subscription model has long outstayed its welcome. Other MMO's, like Guild Wars 2, has a much better model. You buy the game, you play the game. With no restrictions on your play time or in-game currencies, nor raid and world events. Any expansions do need to be bought, but those are generally $20 or so. And you can just wait for the latest expansion to get them all for around that price. On the other hand, SWTOR "gives" you each expansion and update at the tender cost of $140 a year if you pay for 6mo straight each time for $70. Whereas Guild Wars 2 does not have you pay a subscription fee. At all. If SWTOR would greatly decrease their subscription costs, that would invite more players to return. However, most people today would rather spend their money gas, food, utilities, or other games that don't require online connectivity. My advice for former subscribers; If the game gets frustrating with all the restrictions, then it's time to quit the game and find something cheaper that's more fun and better worth your time.

I agree with this for the most part. If you dont really care about the restrictions or are just playing as a solo player by all means dont resub. If you are playing with a group of friends or something then this becomes a problem. The thing about the expansions is that a new one doesnt come out all too often so you just resub right when the new expansion drops and be done.

FF14 & WoW has a sub and its worth every penny since the money goes into quality content updates/expansions. Free to play isn’t always a good thing lol most free to play games have crap updates

i might be late to ask this. i just started yesterday. lets say i go up to lv60 then i subscribe and i want to play latest dlc onslaught. can i play the dlc onslaught feature again if i unsubsribe for the next month? will any of my rewards or gear within the dlc will be restricted to equip until i subs again? thank you very much.

Yes you can play the expansions even after you unsub! Gear is trickier though, you won't be able to wear any new artifact gear.

After the limit is 12 again, you have to pick 12 to "activate" and the rest stay dormant till next time you sub.

yeah that's normal. once you progress you can buy cooldown reductions in the legacy perks tab, with credits

If you want to craft things subscribe. Crafting is something I love in mmos, and the single crew skill for f2p is a huge restriction.

F2P players also start getting reduced XP from all sources once they reach level 20 (Legacy XP included)

There's only a 6 month bundle that I know of, which yep, does reduce the price! 1 month does unlock legacy of the sith!
