I’m sure it will be good… but seriously… can we stop marketing freediving as this insanely deadly sport. It really isn’t. If you follow safety standards, it’s a very approachable, immensely beautiful sport with huge health benefits, both physical and mental.
@brendanbest8826Ай бұрын
100% agree!! But, death and drama sells the most tickets. Anyone who has actually had the experience to dive understand what it’s really about 💧 the culture will shift soon enough
@LaLtheGaLАй бұрын
@@brendanbest8826yeah, I get it. The one issue I have is that because of this image, it makes it difficult as an instructor to rent pool lanes for training and running courses.

I mean it can be if the diver isn’t careful or pushes the limit to stupidity. A lot of GREAT divers have died from underwater hypoxic blackouts (whether shallow or deep) or middle ear barotrauma or even autonomic conflict but most common is underwater hypoxic blackouts.

They said they can't go down to the freediver's depth freediving alongside because they need to freedive to bring a blackout diver back up, but can't they hang out down there with tanks like in The Big Blue and strap a flotation device to a blackout so he'll ascend alone? For that matter they could deploy a rescue drone to loop him up. That would be most efficient. Or have an inflatable device on him for remote deployment on the basis of recognizable signs of unconsciousness/failure to perform. Never mind. He has a line, which was my first question as in why can't they just be tethered in a way which they can be retrieved.
@samuelc3291Ай бұрын
I don't understand why someone can't dive with the free diver with a scuba tank and if the worst case scenario happens, they scuba diver provides oxygen so they dont sufficate to death.
@efteesteinАй бұрын
Scuba divers can’t go as deep without specific gas mixes, and they can’t come back up to the surface as fast as a freediver. If they did they would get decompression sickness. If they gave a freediver a breath of compressed air deep underwater and brought them up to the surface the Freedivers lungs would explode from the expanding gas. Then the scuba diver would also die of decompression. In the past they used to have technical divers waiting at the bottom but they couldn’t do anything for the freediver. Look up audrey mestre for a sad example of this.

Аквалангисты на такую глубину опуститься не смогут.
@whatsupbonaire1864Ай бұрын
Never take compressed air while freediving (depth disciplines) due to lung over expansion + a scuba diver can’t follow/resque the freediver to the surface as the ascent needs to be slower and with safety stops.
@WillyFoxxАй бұрын
hahaha you clearly don't know the sport then, or any physics that involve pressure and gasses combined. It would be a sure death for the scuba

Gorgeous documentary. I feel they could have tweaked the storytelling just a bit, and by that just to elaborate a few minutes more on the locations. It was just another beautiful ocean scene and some writing, on-screen like whiplash. Where is the buildup? And with that particular ending, the whale scene should have been moved to the end, for emphasis. It did seem a little superficial. We didn't really know the contents of the examination, the extent of body damage in the sport, how a sport like this is supported and how that possibly changed with the ban situation. But that could have been ignored if more marvels of cinematography put us in the water as first person, hearing the water, being in the weather elements. We never yet saw the storm. Did he really lose the card because he didn't follow protocol? What about the protocol of the lifeguards? They clearly had to show they were not touching the contestant but that wasn't explained. What was the line that had to be crossed to intervene? If you pass out don't you swallow water? Isn't post-drowning dangerous? What were they supposed to do if the diver passed out below the lifeguards? What was the safety protocol then? At least explain the technical setup of the site or keep the camera on it longer or show the crew setting up or cleaning up to add depth to the experience. I noticed sometimes he was attached to the line, but clipping in wasn't explicitly shown first person although his mother was carried by the current. And what about that, about familiarization with the site? We got a glimpse of different equipment but no one actually spoke about it. What were some historical dangers and how did the current setup reduce those risks? Just because it's a documentary doesn't mean the film medium doesn't tell a story.
