Rahova Prison on the outskirts of the two Million Mega-City Bucharest is the second biggest prison in Romania. Surrounded by two walls, murderers, human traffickers and worse are serving their sentences. Escaping from here is nearly impossible. Each cell wing is monitored separately. Cameras record all movements in its corridors. Prisoners are in their cells for twenty-hours a day. They can only leave under the strictest security measures. Even a walk in the prison yard takes place in cages. Yikes 😳

Heck, I thought the Prisons in the United States were beach homes, let me add something first, a good majority of Federal Prisons are like that. That is where the adage “Club Fed” comes from. Also State Penitentiaries vary from State to State and so does some of their basic mission statements and so forth. The minimum security level penitentiaries are usually not so bad. But when you’re talking about maximum security prisons…you’re basically in hell. Then the Supermax Prisons like ADX Florence….you are in your cell I believe 23 hours a day. I know some countries just throw their criminals in a walled in and fenced in building with towers for guards to shoot and they basically let the prisoners run the place. That’s horrible. But this prison in this documentary seems like the cells are like a one room suite you could rent here in the states. Looks like they treat the inmates much more like human beings than just garbage and the guard seems like he genuinely cares about rehabilitation and the welfare of the prisoners. Which is what penitentiaries are supposed to be about, rehabilitation through paying your debt to society by being confined away from them and then try to come out a better person.

European Union has higher standards for human rights and even though you think our romanian prison looks decent, we are one of the worst in Europe. It happens pretty often for us to not have our fugitives sent back to serve their time, when they are caught in western europe. The reason being our poor detention conditions, with overcrowding being the main reason. We were even sanctioned by the EU not a long time ago, for this issues.

This is a 5-star hotel compared with communist-era jails when the political opponents were exterminated just because they had different doctrines. At that time inmates were "re-educated", and de-personalized and if this didn't work, or the "treatment" was unbearable then they passed away! There are on YT documentaries about communist jails, that are more shocking than the worst you've seen here!

@@adrianstere We can agree that prison conditions, especially due to overcrowding, in Romania are not up to general (Western) European standards. But, the situation is improving, by 2025 there should be accomodation for 8,000 inmates in newly constructed or renovated facilities. This has been enabled with loan from European Development bank, and grants from Norway to e.g. construct Craiova and Vaslui prisons. My point was to state that the conditions in Bucharest detention center are not as horrific as Andrew lets his audience to believe. There has been no major renovation, but having a new bed and a plasma TV in (private) cell could be considered luxury in many parts of the world.

Let me tell you something about Rahova prison. The conditions are far better than other prisons in Romania. One of the explanations is that it is a "transit prison", meaning that many convicts are being held there while their trial is still ongoing or are about to be transfered to other prisons. There are far worse prisons in Romania. Case in point, the Giurgiu Penitenciary. They simply slowly let you die there.

Tate brothers have not been in any prison. They been only in detention (arest) in Romania. Basically, the worst place in Romania to be. Prisons have much better conditions but they can only send you there if you have a final sentence. Otherwise, you need to spend some months on the police station itself (arest) and this one’s they haven’t been upgraded at all since communism. The conditions are indeed compared like in some South American countries. And you can really get sick if you spend to much time in there. Most of the criminals in Romania they just stay there only 1-2 months then after are sent to prison. But for a person to spend 6 months there it’s indeed horrible. Only if you want to kill someone with a disease you will try that. That’s why there are no documentaries about the “arest” places in Romania as they can’t allow anyone to see the dare conditions in there. Not dangerous as for conflicts but more because of the diseases are there from the lack of conditions.

No homeless in Canada wanna go to jail. Homeless people get more food from people mercy, in prison you die of hunger if your family dont help you with money.

This is almost a hotel if compare with some countries that over 50 inmates share the same small room where was suppose to have around 10 , most of them sleeping on the concrete .

There were prisons where the guards were the inmates themselves. One of these locations was at Poarta Albă. I used to travel every day close by its gates and fences. Not sure if is still the case.

dont you think cells are over crowded in Romania ? you had the air court in a cage ? I ve heard there are private prisons in US that have better conditions and people pay to be there.

11:52 wow if that is a thorough search, I don’t wanna see what a quick patdown is! 🤦🏼♂️ Great job on the security and the search for contraband. You can hide a shank anywhere even inside of your body. This wouldn’t fly in an American prison!

US viewers be like: an inmate with a knife in front of a guard. Imagine that!
