As a black woman, I would say think about the ROII (return on investment) Will I be able to pay off my student loans in 10 years. You will have to have a beater car and roommates for 3-4 years.. It does not pay to go to a private school to become a public school teacher.

How can someone who understands if you finance a car it’s a loan that you have to payback, yet not understand that it’s the same principle when you sign them loan papers to finance your education. Seriously, they tell you up front it’s a loan that has to be paid back. Mainly a lot of these folks complaining cuz they took out loans for a degree that is useless in the job market or they took out too much trying to get higher degrees. If there is to be loan forgiveness then forfeit all degrees, certificates and certifications that resulted in taking out the loans…you ain’t gonna do that cuz majority would be out of job cuz your degree and certification is require it for that job and others would probably get fired cuz technically you lied on your resume you have a degree. Basically these folks want a socialist society…gimme, gimme, gimme freebies… Pay your ish back like I did, it ain’t rocket science.

I feel conflicted about this subject. Before I went to law school, I spoke to someone about my concerns re the debt. She told me - everyone who goes to law school take out student loans. It made me pause because tf?! I didn’t agree with that stance, so I did my research and I applied, and received, a full tuition scholarship to go to law school. I graduated with minimum debt and I bought my first home earlier this year at 30. I think there needs to be policy changes yes, but we also need to teach our children how to be financially literate.

Judging by the interviewees responses, it seems like they just didn't think their choices through. If I had to pay 80k to get a degree, I would try to pick a degree with which I can pay back the loan and all of the compunded interest. This black-female-white-male wage gap statistic is about as informative as the standard male-female wage gap, namely not at all. Women make choices in life that significantly impact their overall earning potential. At no point does it occur to these women that their inherited disadvantages are due to poor life choices made by their mothers and fathers and that is not in fact a matter of public policy.

The answer is simple. The initial debt should not the cancelled, but the interest payments should be. All student loans should be interest free. Then everybody would know for certain that they could pay off the debt without getting into a compound interest trap. They would be able to predict their future and thrive without the taxpayer funding them.

I agree, we need to reform the costs of post high school education. A high school degree isn't enough anymore. However, we also need to teach our kids that their job after high school is to pursue the educational path needed for a career. It's okay if that's not their passion, it may need to be something they are just interested in. And that's okay. Once they've achieved a career focused education, if they choose to go back to pursue a non-career education, I'm absolutely for it. Instead of funding foreign wars, let's invest here.
