i stand to be corrected by the creators of this masterpiece series but to me this series reminds me a lot about the universe of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R game. In the stalker universe a mass nuclear disaster occurred years ago some where in Eastern Europe. The large urban and wooded area years later remained mildly radioactive with unbreathable atmosphere (hence wearing of masks). In the aftermath there are mutated creatures roaming the area, occurrence of abnormal physics and abnormal weather. Several unknown organizations went in to research and experiments. A host of characters who are usually armed known as STALKERS (Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, etc) roam the place.

i think you need to have read the stalker novel to appreciate this series. Others wise its a bunch of masked guys shooting each other. Though post apocalyptic fiction such as stalker and metro not for everyone. Those who enjoy stalker, metro and the American fall out series will no doubt enjoy this mini series.
