On August 4th, 1964, the search for three missing civil rights activists came to a tragic end. Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were white New Yorkers. They were working with James Chaney, a black CORE worker from Mississippi, organizing black citizens to vote. Last seen on June 21, the three men had been shot to death. Nineteen men were indicted in the case. An all-white jury found seven of them guilty.
