I installed a Moog ball joint a few weeks ago and am happy with it, and will be installing a Moog outer and inner tie rod on my 2013 Ford Edge because I've always considered Moog to make good quality parts, and then I start seeing some videos which say otherwise... so I am glad that you made this video and that the people from Moog show that they are interested in preserving quality. I still haven't installed my tie rods but will do so in a couple of weeks and am looking forward to see how the Moog part will work in my vehicle, since I need to replace the ball joint and tie rods on the other side.

I use MOOG to replace OEM parts on my fleet vans. On my stock H2 too. MOOG put grease nipples where the factory should have. If the grease nipple is a spot that makes greasing the vehicle complicated, they send an extension with the part. Never have any issue and these parts outlast OEM.

Started working on cars over forty years ago, before I could even drive, helping my father with his. Out of high school my first job was in an auto parts store that supplied the mechanics shops for miles in every direction and Moog as a fixture in that store. Seeing them sell out to Wall Street and off shoring production out of the USA, was a major disappointment. They can do all the marketing they want but until they correct that issue, my money goes elsewhere. You seemed to be dancing around that subject quite a bit in this video.

Just seeing your Moog videos for the first time now, doing research on ball joint replacement for my 5th gen 4R. I'm just really confused though, because as you pointed out in your previous video, the 555 definitely looks more heavy duty and higher quality than this new black one. I have a hard time believing that the new black one is any type of improvement. Did they mention anything with the metallurgy or anything like that?
@FreedomCrawler
@FreedomCrawler 2 жыл бұрын
So when I talked to them it was a group of people from their team including engineers. What they mentioned was that their goal was to make it like factory but with better components. I couldn’t give the exact details they did however I told them exactly what you mentioned. Not only did the 555 look more pronounced the fact that they didn’t have any badging on the part made it “look” less substantial and too similar to the knockoffs. To their credit they acknowledged they and noted it. They also said if I started hearing any negative feedback or experiences to relay it over for them to look into or reply to people on. The fact that they reached out at all was extremely impressive to their goal of increasing their reputation again

@@FreedomCrawler thanks for the quick reply! I've always liked Moog stuff, I've used it with success on older domestic vehicles I've owned. I guess I've just been conditioned by Toyota people saying to stay away from them in the 3 years I've owned my 4R, because I'm having a hard time not thinking this "improvement" is really just an improvement to their profit margin by outsourcing to a less expensive manufacturer. I'll probably stick with OEM when I get around to doing them. They've lasted going on 150k, so once I do them I'll probably never have to do them again.

I’ll reach out to them and see if they actually talked to MOOG directly. A quick search doesn’t tell much. People complain when they have issues and rarely speak out when things are good. That’s like saying you’re a subject knowledge expert from a quick google search instead of doing an actual research test hands on using actual products. This is exactly what the MOOG team conveyed to me. WAY before they offered me any parts. I’ve used Moog on everything I’ve ever needed parts for and have had zero issues. That’s first hand. Secondly I spoke directly with the engineering team at the company in depth on their increased quality control and their market perception. Than I waited months doing my own online research and reaching out to people before I even mentioned to them that I had another build going. Then they offered to send parts. So, I’m good to go

That’s a a great question. Factory or for lifts? I would assume for lifts they do not. Possible for stock applications but That’s a great question. I don’t see a lot of people replacing factory control arms unless they are lifting them. On that note I’ve thrown away a ton of factory control arms after doing a lift. Moog RK parts unfortunately aren't great at all. They are actually bottom Value Grade at best. This is why O'reilly Auto Parts Invested into there own company and created Precision and dropped Moog because the amount of Moog Warranties were getting out of control. The only local store I know of that still sells Moog is Advance Auto and Private owned Parts Stores. You can get all the free parts you want for this paid video but I Disagree to a point. I am an ASE World Class Automotive Technician with over 25 years professional experience and I see it every day. 10 years ago Moog sold a quality product that actually exceeded OE by far. Now not so much. Once Moog got sold off a few times now the company that once had a great reputation is now out to maximize profits with cheap parts made of inferior designs and cheap metal. If you see a Control arm that starts with RK it's not great at all it's actually below OE grade. This is from a guy who has a Moog Front end on his Truck. But if you buy a Moog RK Control arm and that's your only option I'd go as far and take the ball joint out and replace it with a "CK or K" Series Problem Solver Ball joint because the Quality level difference is extremely significant. It's night and day. The CK & K Series Parts can be made in America, Japan and Taiwan. They have grease fittings and the quality is at OE level. The RK Series parts are usually made in China and don't last at all and are terrible. They don't last at all... So this is me not totally talking down Moog. This is just to get people to understand the difference in the product lines they sell... CK & K = GOOD...... RK=BAD & CHEAP.... I will say it once more. If you are forced to buy an RK Moog Control Arm. Take the Ball joint out and replace it with a CK/K Problem Solver Balljoint and you have the best possible combo. I get it's allot of work. But I'd rather install it before to get a OE level part rather than a Balljoint that lasts 7 days- 2 months. I can also prove my credentials if needed. I have been in my local newspaper and I'm on the ASE Website....

@@FreedomCrawler I wasn't totally crapping on Moog. Like I said the CK/K Series parts are OE Level Quality. The RK parts are an issue. Put an RK Control Arm on a GM Pickup for 6 months. Then Unload the front end and you will see exactly what I mean. Then you install a CK/K Problem Solver Balljoint in and it lasts for about 2-5 years. The Bushings however are okay amongst either Product line. Just make sure in any SLA suspension you're unloading the suspension and checking them with a prybar. I generally use a Floor jack under the control arm to check the ball joints with a prybar under the tire and a prybar to check the bushings.

Unfamiliar with MOOG, I just ordered some MOOG front suspension parts for my diesel truck and became concerned after reading some reviews. If that black ( powder coat? ) lower ball joint in that other video is being called by Moog as "an upgrade to the 555 part"......then I don't believe Moog for a New York minute. Anyone with common sense could CLEARLY see the differences in quality between those 2 parts. The black lower ball joint had NO stainless steel rings holding the rubber boot in place, while the 555 part did. Even the casting itself looked far superior on the 555 part vs the black part. The black lower ball joint didn't even have a grease fitting to service the joint.
@howabouthetruth2157
@howabouthetruth2157 Жыл бұрын
The OEM Toyota lower ball joints are made in Japan.......and expensive as all hell. I found them, and they wanted $108 EACH. Crazy. And don't confuse the fact that the lower ball joints in 1st gen Tacoma's as being the weak point in the entire suspension, with "these OEM lower ball joints WILL cause catastrophic failure". Sure, they are the weakest point of the entire system, but that doesn't mean "they're going to break". If they're worn and exhibit play when testing them, they should be replaced immediately like ANY lower ball joint. I bought my 2000 Tacoma 4x4 with 3RZ engine brand new. And let me tell ya, I ran this truck through the ringer when it was new, going offroad. I was crossing huge canals ( only inches of water over 12 to 15 inches of mud in the bottom ) that are 50 ft wide at the top and about 20 something feet wide at the bottom, with the levies on both sides as steep & high as the side of a typical overpass. I would literally slalom back & forth, crossing these canals, for the entire length if the canal, usually over an 1/8th of a mile. NONE of the other 4 wheelers would even attempt to do it even once .........and they all said: "You're f*cking crazy". Now imagine how much I was causing my entire suspension to flex while doing that. Never once lost a lower ball joint. I finally replaced them somewhere north of the 300,000 mile mark, and yes, they were worn out. The original OEM lower ball joints failing is quite rare for the typical every day driver, and of those that have failed, I truly believe they were defective to begin with.........or people aren't being truthful about their lower ball joints being worn out. Perhaps they weren't even aware that they were worn out. I replaced mine with the blue Mevotech "Supreme" ball joints ( the rubber boot is blue ). That was nearly 3 years ago, and so far, so good. @@briana3544

Parts are made in China and they made me speak French for 3 days 😂. Once the O Reilly were in it aligned no problems and drives like a Caddy now. Plus O Reilly are lifetime guarantee! Anyways, I feel your pain. Very sorry to hear. A job like this sucks enough w/o mislabelled parts!! Wishing you the best at figuring it out. Tried to put a review on Moog Amazon and they didn’t allow me!? WTH. Cheers bro French in the garage. I was throwing wrenches at the wall. I use OEM, O Reilly or Rock Auto. Also- Amazon sells FAKE NGK DENSO plugs on Amazon- Toyota sells them almost same price OEM. Check the YT vids on that brother. Also, if you need axles check the web. A place here in UT rebuilds OEM ones and sells them

Moog parts are great if you can get new old stock. I. E. American made. Avoid any Chinese parts.
