First Hay Harvest: the ups & downs (and dangers!) (

Chuck and I get to work harvesting our hay & experience a few hardships in the process. Also, a quick update on the log home & the pregnant hogs.

The bales you have tying issues with you can roll out and re-bale (tie them the second time) You also could double up the windrows with the side rake for less travel and quicker/better bale creation. And until you get the second remotes put on the tractor, you could probably run long lines with adapters to the load controls out front and use say the bucket control to tie the bales.

Love the suggestion on re-baling! I tried a few windows of double raking but I had to go much slower to bale so I decided to try on another field. I tried the hoses it need special fittings. On to the remote! 😊. Thanks for watching!

Well done for having a go ....i bought my first round baler 3 yrs ago and i was unsure about so many things but luckily it worked fine..... im sure once you get that second hydraulic outlet on your tractor you will get on really well.... great teamwork from you both and so glad to hear you be so supportive too each other x

Definitely recommend using wrapping instead of twine on the round bales; they can be stashed in a single layer next to each other for a year even in the elements and the outer layer of hay and wrapping help it stay fresh in the center. As long as you're not trying to sell it the hay stays plenty fresh enough to use for feed. Awesome to see people getting into it!

@@chuckanderson1770a CLAAS Rollant 66 is a great net wrap baler and they are very simple to operate/work on. You can get them anywhere from $8,000-$15,000 depending on condition, bale count and year. It’s a roller type baler so no belts I think you would enjoy it much better. Also if you can try to get one that has a wide pickup on it, that thing will eat some huge thick windrows like nobodies business! I’m starting a hay business this year 24 years old I’ve never done the full operation of making hay so I know the learning curves can be brutal! Best of luck!

Shutting down your pto with a full roll and restarting the pto again to twine is very hard on the main drive shaft on the roller it could eventually break it . Good luck JD has awesome rollers main thing to keep them clean and in the dry. Thanks for the video

I'm a bit surprised that tractor didn't have 2 remotes standard. That's going to be a sweet setup once you get that second remote installed. I'm sure that had to be a huge pain to constantly switch out the hydraulics for each bale.

I’ve found that a lot of hay rots when I stacked them outside…rain gets between the bales and never drys again causing mold and rotting……if you have room I suggest placing them in rows with 12 in. Space between each bale…..just tryin to help

Yes, the rotting is a huge fear of ours, especially after all the hard work to create the bales. We covered them with tarps and have on our to-do list to build a shed for future coverage. Thanks for watching and for your help!

Great job, Chuck & Brook! Don’t listen to the naysayers, it’s your first time doing it yourself. Big difference than doing it when you were under the tutelage of your father who was probably a pro. If you don't get a second hydraulic yet I think you can convert the string tie to a rope you pull on.very graceful save on the tipped baler. 20000 feet plastic is what I use. The 9000 is just thicker for square bales.

My mother took diner to dad in the field at noon. What state are you in? On my 4010 John deere I have single hydraulics. I have quick disconnects on the loader. I can put hose extensions on the bucket tip hoses. This gives a second hydraulic out let. You could build a manifold with pipe tees and valves. Open and close valves from the tractor seat. Hope this helps you.

Well not knowing the variety of Hay, I would say that by the emerging seed=heads that it is a wee bit past optimum nutrient value, but as my Son would say "it is better than pine straw and snowballs" We restared the Small Family Farm after a 30 year hiatus which ended with the USDA dairy buy out in 1986.... WE row cropped Cotton and Peanuts for 4 years then were shoved us into where the real money,, Commercial Hay..... We are starting our 7th year supplying TSC with Small Squares converted from 4x5 rounds we baled,. hauled and stored especialy for that purpose....... P,S My Son put his City Slicker Wife in the tractor seat and she rolled over 300 Net Wrapped bales one afternoon..... Also if those baler belt splice pins have never ben changed -------- You are gonna have Fun...... A JOB that usually takes 30 minutes took us 6 Hours ......; and we are mechanically minded people'!!!!!

Enjoy your channel, 2 things, and you probably already know this, a flat bed trailer with no sides will make life MUCH easier loading hay and I have the same tractor as you, absolutely love it but make sure you keep the front grille clean from debri, it can cause the tractor to run hot, best of luck with your farm

I'm not sure but if the hydraulic line will reach the mid mount for the loaders third function you might get away with using one of those until you add a remote either way you learned how to use that bailer so next time will be easier. The M and R series come with different things on them and I think the M has a second remote and I'm pretty certain the R has Multiple remotes but they cost so much more and I think that one is just as capable for what you're doing.

@ 20.00 you show accuratly the slope of the land. The view from the tractor is deseptively flat. I am off steeper country than that and it can make things tricky when baling.

Ok I’m not a hater I’m just concerned being very inexperienced farmers you need to have your PTO covers all it takes is a split second to wrap a human up in that PTO don’t take the mind set that we will stay away cause it doesn’t work that way that is one of the most dangerous things on a farm guards are there so we don’t go to an early grave I cannot stress how important that is That is some nice hay nice orchard mix

We have great neighbors who are very helpful! I grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm but haven’t farmed in 45 years. I know a lot of the basics but am amazed how much I forgot 😊. Can’t bale hay after the dew starts falling. Damp hay will clog the baler. Shouldn’t take over than 1 1/2 hours to bale 7 acres. This video is very tiring.
