Not to take away from the magic, but one of the reasons for multiple camera angles in addition to creating movement and visual interest in editing is to also create spots for different takes. Not to say that Mike couldn't do this in one take, but it would take FAR longer to record the video if they had to stop and redo the entire thing every time something wasn't perfect. Definitely agree with you on all points - especially with the songwriting. Portnoy gives DT a bit of edge due to his influences. Plus I think with him being absent there's been an imbalance in the basic songwriting, as it's been left to Petrucci and Rudess. As much as I love Jordan as a player, his range as a composer is rather limited and seems rather cheesy (which explains the Astonishing, which has a strong blue cheese smell - and not in a good way). I hope that things have clicked back into place on this new album, because I've found most of the last 5 albums to be largely uninspired.

i was a dream theater fanatic between the ages of 14 and 19. when i started getting into more modern prog like periphery, tesseract, the contortionist, animals as leaders and alike i completely forgot about DT. recently i've been revisiting DT and LTE, and i realize more than ever how far they ahead they were of their time.

I don't know why watching him play drums even with an imperfect drum set tune for DT songs is so satisfying. Watching this for the 5th time.

Mike Portnoy indeed cannot be separated from Dream Theater. But if I may be honest, Mike Mangini is still the best.

Portnoy is a beast! I'm quite happy that he is back to DT.

His kit, shorts, shirt, beard, and even the lighting are all the colour Blue. Considering being surrounded by the calming effects of this colour; I doubt a real panic-attack would ever happen.
