In 1975 I was working in Prudhoe Bay. It was 55 below and very still and clear. The Aurora appeared like a giant theater curtains in the sky of many colors, it made an eerie crackling unearthly sound similar to high pitched static electricity. Saw altogether it made the hair on my neck stand up. In four years of working there I never saw such an intense display. A once in a lifetime display!

Thank you for sharing your story! QUESTION About the sound: Was the sound soft and coming from all over, like if the sky was a great big speaker? Or was it more of an "in your ear" kind of sound like from those "bone induction" kind earphones that they have out now. My husband saw the auroras near St. Albans Vt He layed down in the middle of a stretch of 2 lane highway amidst the corn and hayfields. He didn't remember any sound but it was a long time ago and he was quite young - in his teens). He is in his 70s now. One night in the 90s, I swear i could hear a sizzle or a crackle from a meteorite that flew low overhead - it was a fireball of flame and it did fizzle out before it came all the way down.

2024 has benn stellar. I witnessed magnificent aurora three separate times now. In May, August, and just two nights ago in October. This most recent one was the most mesmerizing. The aurora plus also catching the eclipse in April has been treating the bucket list quite nicely. I'm hoping to spot comet Atlas in the next few nights.

I noticed that in this video that the sound made by an Aurora Borealis are made by our brain I say BS to that! What I heard was real and not my imagination. They say that the visual image on the brain makes the sound. When I sat in my truck to warm up I could still hear the sound when I wasn't looking at the Aurora. It DOES make sound!

I believe you. Science is funny, it only accepts what it can record. Yet earlier in this video it talked about recording what the eye can see but the camera misses.

Yes, at times you can do things to coax a buzzing or whisping sound in your ears through visuals or whatever but its not real sound. The over sensory stimulation of the lights mixed with the cold and crispness of the air could produce this effect. When I was a kid I saw blue railroad tracks in the sky when the northern lights came down to the city. Just by looking at the sky you could barely see they were there and then the whole sky was full of it. Like bands of blue ribbon in the sky like railroad tracks just bending and looping around everywhere. Can anyone tell me anything about this?
