I'm new to this game and have only watched a couple of videos. As a history enthusiast, I appreciate the plethora of strategic and diplomatic options and the amazing attention to historical detail that was put into it. What ruins it for me though is the absurd lack of realism when it comes to the actual combat (i.e. Japan invading and conquering all of India, USA and the UK). This almost turns it into a joke for me, which is a shame. Is this because of mods or is the original game like that as well?

Well, it's more or less the game. There are mods who try to make the game as realistic as possible, Darkest hour for example. In the end, though, it's a game, so you want people to have fun with it. The mod I used here tries to make the focuses and other stuff to be historical, but keep the vanilla game aspects, so people don't get overwhelmed. I myself enjoy it that way, but that's just me.

the original game is even worse, especially because the developers of the base game often times have no foresight or sense of what they're doing, so there's a bunch of cheesy exploits and ridiculous paths (like Bulgaria peacefully puppeting and annexing the entire balkans). And at the end of the day, it's a war strategy game so experienced players can always pull of shenanigans like invading the US.. but as enforcerguy already mentioned, mods like Darkest Hour make things far less ridiculous
