Love this approach as it requires "complicating" the first equation, which is something my students struggle with conceptually. Could you not treat x-y as a difference of squares from the start, or do you think the square/square root step is necessary for understanding? Two alternative approaches, you can substitute y=x-17 into the second equation and solve for x, though it takes squaring both sides twice while solving. Also, you can substitute m=sqrt(x) and n=sqrt(y) to turn get m+n=17 and m^2-n^2=17, and then substitute n=17-m into the second equation and solve.

all i did was add y to both sides on the first equation and take square root so you get sqrt(x)=sqrt(y+17) then in the second equation subtract sqrt(y) so you get sqrt(x)=17-sqrt(y) and then set them equal so sqrt(y+17)=17-sqrt(y) and from there its pretty easy to solve

Hey Mr McLogan! You made this problem seem so easy since other math youtubers did this same problem and did something so much more difficult! Thank you so much!!

Does this solution work if two equations does not equate to a same number?

Hey man, aren't you supposed to square the 17 since you squared the square root of x and y? Just a query here🙂

Try evaluating (√x)² and it should be x again! Its like multiplying 2/2 to x and it is still x after you simplify it. He did that so he can use this rule (x²-y²)=(x+y)(x-y) to get √x +√y. I hope my explanation works. Edit: he made x-y to (√x)²-(√y)² if that's what confused you
