I set up FreeNAS about 15 months ago using a small MB, 16GB RAM and five 2TB drives, running FreeNAS from a 16GB USB drive. It does take some working out first time in but I think it's worth it. A few months after setting it up and loading about 3TB of data it reported SMART considered one of the drives was about to fail and should be replaced urgently. The first problem was to work out which actual drive to replace. After plugging in the new drive it took about 15 hours to reconstruct and report OK. It wasn't used during that period; playing it safe. I am now looking at adding another five 2TB drives.

I have the same setup. Just all placed in a pc case that doesn't have enough storage slots. I never seem to have the side of my case shut.

I started off years ago with a lot of old hard drives in a large PC case. But it was inconvenient and used a lot of power. My first FreeNAS is just parts mounted on a gear-tray temporarily and is still operating sitting on a shelf well over a year later. I have recently made a purpose-built enclosure using foam-pvc sheet that supports the motherboard, 10 HDDs with ventilation and a power supply arrangement that runs from 24V DC.

I love FreeNAS and I even have the proper hardware for it (E3 Xeon, ECC ram, etc) It works great and very easy to use.

Thanks for the video. it was flawless. I just tried to setup FREENAS but my attempt completely failed. Not sure why but i'll figure that out later. I still FREENAS is my best bet and your video demonstrates how well it actually works.

Put some sort of vibration absorber pad under your tabletop microphone.. Every time you click a key on your keyboard, my speakers go with a dicernible low frequency 'bump'.

hi, you can enable the network to recycle bin on SMB Shared folder, deleted files will be moved to the Recycle bin folder. else you can enable file system snapshots too.. happy to help.

You will need the following: Dedicated PC (not a virtual machine. While popular, it is best to use dedicated hardware for performance) Minimum of 3 WD Purple HDDs (designed for surveillance or the SSD equivalents to WD purples) then set for the RAID-z (aka RAID 5 which as pointed out allows only one drive to fail. Performance is sacrificed but you have redundancy) 8GB or more RAM (remember FreeNAS is not a Windows RAM hog OS so you don't need to go overkill) Decent CPU (Intel i7 or even i5's are more than ample) Motherboard platform mATX (pizza box cases or micro tower depending on the space you have). The WD hard drives are the most expensive purchase due to their design. Cost is based on the size either in GB and TB. WD Green very low cost (eco friendly) low cost, but are really not designed for heavy usage) WD Blue low cost (general purpose/daily use) while they can do some heavy lifting I don't recommend them for your application WD Black mid rage cost (heavy duty) designed for gaming, music production, video production etc. WD Red high cost (heavy duty plus) designed for NAS systems WD Purple high cost (heavy duty plus) designed for surveillance systems While any hard drive can technically do the job, the right tools will give you the best results.

FreeNAS will not dual boot. During Setup, it will overwrite the entire drive you provide to it.

You would need a separate drive. Same with any OS. You need the install USB to be intact in order to transfer all the files. You can't overwrite the install drive without errors.

Like I have created a user his name is RAM. and also created a share folder which name is RAM. I want to give the permission only RAM to open his folder. another user not open his folder. how to setup this in freenas ? pls help me... Thank You.. For Windows

Raja Ray I have managed it once I had many issues trying to set it up multiple times. Been a while since I touched freenas but I think as long as you assign each user on freenas a storage share of their own then nobody else will be able to access it. There may be other steps but those were the basics.

It's my computer, I have root access because I own the thing and I know what I'm doing. You absolutely shouldn't run something as root if you found it on the internet and you don't understand what it does. A mount command? That's kind of what root's for. If you're setting the computer up for someone else and you want a regular user to be able to mount something, you can make that happen by editing the fstab file, but you still need root access to edit that fstab file. So it's kind of "necessary" in this case.
