In this video, I’ll show you how to install a lock in the front of the toolbox. This is something we haven’t covered before on the Free Online Woodworking School, but of course it’s completely optional should you wish to omit this stage.
As always, if you need more information on this stage or would like to know how to do this by hand, take a look at the supporting resources below.

WHAT IS THE FREE ONLINE WOODWORKING SCHOOL?
When designing the online course, Matt wanted to make it as close as possible to his own experience learning at Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford. Primarily, by providing a structured course that anyone can follow, without having to find their own way through an arbitrary list of videos on KZbin.

Want to build this project yourself? Consider grabbing a project pack from our store! 🪚 mattestlea.com/projectpacks 💥 These are pre-machined packs that we process in bulk, meaning we can offer them at an affordable price while still maintaining the accuracy and quality we're known for. You'll also find material for all the other projects we have taught such as: 👇 The Dovetail Box Project: kzbin.info/aero/PLJZTXsmiGZKcVjT6S-0fHGoyH4y7W6riT The Cabinet Project: kzbin.info/aero/PLJZTXsmiGZKeNp1Uz0VK0mGbBSCq918w9 The Shaker Table Project: kzbin.info/aero/PLJZTXsmiGZKfk3NW1gcpTRlIAnr1WvksQ Finally, don't forget to use the links in the description if you want to purchase one of the tools/consumables I recommend in these videos. Great vid. I love my digital marking gauge and calipers. Just set the marking gauge to the same number as the calipers read. Very fast, easy peasy and super precise. Also a great demo of fixing a gap.

That is a really clear instruction on lock fitting so thanks for that. I'm about to fit a lock onto a small box the sides of which are only 10mm thick. This will leave about 3mm of material once the lock mechanism is cut out. Is this too thin to risk? It's a relatively hard wood, but not as hard as oak. Your views would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Great to have you back, hope all is well, Your detail and clear explanation sets you apart in the wood working genre of "makers". You are playing a critical part in helping develop this current generation of wood worker, so thank you.

This is my first video of yours that I’ve watched. I really enjoyed it and will be back. You’re very thorough and articulate in your explanations. I noticed that the back of the lid on the left rear side (facing the lock & key) appears slightly raised, i.e., there is a gap. Is that an optical illusion or is it a problem with the hinges? I assume you inset each half of each hinge. Thanks.

Edit: You address this in video #15 about sanding at 9:08 into that one. When you close the box at 22:57, the front closes flush but there's a consistent gap at the back where the hinges are. Is that normal/expected when you offset the hinges (so the lid stops just past 90 degrees)? I'm assuming it is intentional because of your high level of attention to detail. Is there a way to set the hinges so that the lid closes flush all the way around? It might just be a matter of getting different hinges. Thanks! Great work as always.

I noticed the same thing. Sometimes the lock mechanism will cause the front of the lid to sit up slightly, thus creating a more even gap. If you wanted it perfect, you could adjust the back of the box by deepening the mortises for the hinges (narrows the gap), or shim the hinges (widens the gap).

Hi Matt, thank you for all the detail. I learn so much from your videos. Quick question. Why not install the lock hardware before assembling the box?
