I was lied to in 1994. Your most excellent video just helped me learn the truth. I was told that in a fully fueled 172, if a 180# long-legged pilot took an average sized couple up, who are both in the back seat looking forward to getting in the mile high club, a bag of water softener salt had to be put in the front passenger seat to balance the plane. This is not true. The stupid bag of salt wasn't needed at all.

Thank you for these excellent videos. Just a note. The movement needed is exactly 2 inches. The rounding of 500/950 caused the error of ~0.014 inches in the CG shift. If you write out the formula, it is pretty friendly: 250/950 = (500/950)/x 250=500x x=2

Your vids are awesome - I had a quick question - How would one have a Forward CG or calculate that? The chart shown in this video (as well as the C172 training supplement I fly) only shows the inches aft of the datum? Where would we find a Forward CG. Thanks!
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining Жыл бұрын
This is a good question. Remember, our measurements are all made from the datum. It doesn’t matter where those measurements start, but on a specific aircraft, the measurements need to be made from the same spot. On 99.9% of aircraft your forward CG limit is still going to be aft of the datum. They are telling you where that spot is in relation to the datum. No manufacturer does this, but I could take all my measurements from the tail. In that case, the tail would be my datum and ALL my limits would be forward of the datum. Hope this helps

time stamp 14:40 you said 20/40 is .5, that would be a positive number, then later you called it -.5. I dont see where the negative came in. However I do agree with moving the 10 lb weight to the left .5 inches. Can you clarify why you called the .5 negative???
@ipoopsometimes9123
@ipoopsometimes9123 Ай бұрын
If you move left of the fulcrum it's negative, to the right is positive. Here, the weight was positive .5 to the right so he moved it left. That's when it became negative.

@ltmedic3

I'm confused.At 20:04 the numerator is -.53, but when you cross multiply it changed to -.15. Then at the round 26:35 mark you said the arm was 95 with 50 pound bag giving a moment of 5, but it was 4.75. Another question I have is all the test questions I have seen so far say the empty weight of the plane includes undrainable fuel and oil but your example shows deleting the oil listing, is that aircraft specific? By the way I have already completed the sporty's PPL course and your series are so much better at explaining the information.

20:14 why did you change -.53 to -15?
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining 8 ай бұрын
-15 is wrong. When I first calculated this -15 came from some wrong data and accidentally got left in the video. All calculations are based on -.53 which is the correct number

@FreePilotTraining Thank you for clarifying. I have no idea if I'll pass a class 1 medical so I can become an ATP, but I'm doing some preemptive studying anyway. Also thank you for having this series up. ❤️

Your calculation is odd. We just need to makes the moment equals to either side of fulcrum. So just minus the right moment 500 LB*Inch. Which moves the 250 lb 2 inches leftward.

True, but you don’t always have easy weights to work with. And you don’t typically have load stations in 2” increments
