Really great camera work. I love how she changed the aspect ratio during sound recordings; feels just like a video game cut scene.

I have to say, this is a great learning video for those wanting to get into field recording, your frustration paid off, and it's pretty funny that you were working hard to find wind--- Mother nature is truly unpredictable, but Seoul looks like an amazing city -- Libby, your videography skills are just superb, and of course you two make some of the best field recording videos out there, so accessible and don't talk down to others in them like some do from time to time, love that about you two--- the enthusiasm you have for even the simplest sounds is so contagious! it's really helped me to listen closer to where I am to notice unique sounds around me--- so awesome you two!

I went from mainly doing camera op work to using the MixPre and doing sound. I've never loved a bit of kit more than it. So userfriendly, incredible preamps and the 32bit float is a genuine lifesaver. Used to use a Rolan R44 so it's quite the jump! Excellent video.

Loved this! Even though you might not think that you achieved your goal, you still made a very entertaining video and showed other creators that -- to quote the great Rolling Stones -- you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might just find you get what you need. But if you really do want wind, you both have a standing invitation to come and visit me on my Scottish island! I have a feeling there's a Rycote or Cinela in my future if I continue down the path that I've started on with ambient recording. It's almost never not windy here!

I didn't mind at all. I always enjoy your videos and this one was great as usual. Saying that, the Windkillers didn't seem too great with the way they handled that very small wind. Thanks anyway. Always fun to see another video.

Thank you so much for your support! In high winds I wouldn't use the windkillers. Working on some cool walking videos now.

I love those microphones, but dang they are expensive for just a hobbyist like me. I wonder instead of a 90 degree XLR adapter if you found a 45 and 125 to give you a Y pattern if you would get a little more benefit of using two microphones for better L/R separation. Thinking of like when your pointing at the street and cars are passing by, the pattern of the mics only separated by such a small distance I don't think that they would be recording much a difference in sound. I dont think such an adapter is really made, so I would probably build a little jig using the 45's so that I could pan them to any direction.

Nice vidéo. it would be interesting to listen the difference with a stereo bar (ORTF 17cm, XY) the stereo image would be larger. Thanks

I agree that its only good for light wind situations. Its important to pull the Bubblebee away from the microphone a bit after putting it on so no material is touching the grill. Also glad to see another recordist using the Peak travel tripod. I love mine. But I bought the universal head adapter to hold my heavier blimps.
@FreeToUseSounds2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken! That is good point I haven't mentioned with the wind protection. The Peak Design we have is the alu-version and pretty heavy but the carbon is too expensive.

Thanks Marcel, great portable setup in low wind! It would also be interesting to compare this with two slighter wider spaced omnis but I guess would make it less compact setup.

A lot of steps Marcel & Libby, but well worth it. The Windkillers seemed fine with a breeze but they did show their limitations in the wind. Did you find you needed to use the extra headroom the 32 bit recording gave you, or does your gain level mean you rarely need it? Thanks🙂
@FreeToUseSounds2 жыл бұрын
Hello Andy! You make an excellent point that with a 24 bit recorder and no limiter, you would need to monitor the recording more often in order to avoid hitting 0. Although it did not occur in our examples, but knowing that a 32 bit is highly useful in strong winds.

I watch every one of your videos. You are doing well in the field of audio. I try to record the sound around the car with audio recorder (zoom H1n) + windscreen lounge on my car, but the sound of wind is more in the record, please tell me the solution to this problem. Thank You

Just about to order a Windkiller for a shotgun so very timely review! Have you considered, in that you were not able to find wind while testing, that they may be far more powerful than you imagine and were actually changing the nature of the environments you were in and eliminating wind before it started? :)
@FreeToUseSounds2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason. The weather has already changed and used them in higher winds than the last example stopped recording right away and changed back to the Cinela.

Hello from France ! I have a Mixpre 6 II that I use with an MKH30 and MKH40 (mid side). I make nature recordings and sometimes need to turn the gain up to +80db. The microphones produce white noise when the gain is too high. So I'm looking for a solution to remove the white noise. I wanted to buy the Sound Device's plugin (noiseAssist) and I asked sound device if we could use noiseAssist to do what I want, here is the response from sound device: "We would not recommend Noise Assist for nature recordings, as it may cause artifacts to occur that degrade the quality of the nature sounds." So I don't know what to do to remove the white noise for my ambience and nature recordings without damaging birds, insects, and other natural sounds. What do you recommend?

I really enjoyed watching your videos. I have a question that is a bit technical that maybe you can answer. I'm looking for a microphone setup to measure my headset sound quality. Do you recommend any particular gear or microphone for this test? I was thinking to get the Roland CS-10em and insert into headphone cup and record the sound. Thanks :)

Since you are "looking" for wind, would it not be better removing the dead cat?

OK, this video was not about the mic technique - but I'm not impressed by the stereo field from this set up: two separated cardioid at no angle. Sure it might be good enough for many cases and also practical but I have a feeling it's a poor compromise between X/Y and ORTF and still not as easy to use as a proper handheld device - so neither of the advantages. Not saying it's useless however...
