I just got mine a few days ago, but I quickly realized that if you're going to move around with this thing, the volume buttons "Rattles" they are the only loose buttons on the unit, so a quick tips for anyone with an H1N is to cut a small strip of black electrical tape and place it over the two volume buttons to the left of the unit, it will remove the rattling sound, and you can still use the buttons. A little everyday hack for you.

I also do travel videos and city walk . Am just wondering which one will be best and also after the record did I need to do any post production on it or just the sound from the mic quality is enough. Just like normal video we do editing and colour grading just to boost the colour. Did I need any software to mix or boost the quality?

The H1N is my backup audio when shooting in the field in remote areas. I stash it maybe 50 yards from my primary location. When people walk to a location I'm recording at and do nothing but talk I politely let them know I'm recording audio so if they don't want everyone knowing where the bodies are buried probably best to stay quiet.

Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.

I agree about recording water. I was at the Gletscherschlucht in Grindelwald last year and tried to record it, but sadly it was nothing but very very loud white noise. There was no way of recording it and making it sound like a fast flowing canyon river. The walls of the canyon were very high and the noise was too loud. I tried with the H1n but had to delete it because it sounded like nothing. Anyway, I still love my H1n and it was you who made me get one when I started out, after seeing your video about how you started in this business. Anyway, great video as usual. I am really loving your recent walkabout uploads. Great job but it's a shame the H1n didn't really pick up the sound of the cricket so well. Everything else was really great for a tiny cheap handheld.

It's still so much fun to walk around with only a handy recorder like this. And the sound quality is OK for most cases (e.g. ambiance for movies). I love my H1n and my Tascam DR-05 that I always have with me. Sirens, farm machinery, birds, dogs, thunderstorms... there are so many opportunities that I would miss without these little recorders. @@FreeToUseSounds There is an unusual way to use this mic. I can record field sounds straight to my footage even if the camera is far way from the object. I have a Synco G2 and the receiver I put in top of my camera and I connect the zoom h1n on the transmiter of the synco, so, instead of use the little mic of the synco transmiter I use the greate X Y Mic of H1n. It just turned my H1n on a wireless mic. Resuming this setup: Zoom h1n record the audio send to synco transmiter and the synco transmiter send the audio to the receiver and the receiver send the audio to my camera straight to the footage.

Record an instrumental vocal and personal concert on it. I put it exactly in the middle of the two columns, a distance of about 10m. I adjust the volume myself. The limiter is on. Or when listening to a video editing program, I have bad headphones, I always have different sound from different concerts. Or is it a jamb of the most customizable equipment and speakers.

Cool video! Nice to see the creativity and results with a lower priced recorder! What I’m always wondering about is how to balance your headphone level with your gain level..have any tips on that?
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 2 жыл бұрын
This is a really good question to ask because headphone preamps can be noisy too. In a quiet area I have the volume on 100 and lower it down depending on the gain level. It happened sometimes that I think I recorded to noisy just to find out later during the editing process that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. In loud areas I try to be around 60 to 80 but that also depends ion the sound source.

Nice seeing you are still using this recorder. This is also my first recorder I bought after seeing so much of your videos about it. But the weird thing is, I think now there is a problem with it and I don’t know why is like this. 🙁 Wherever I record, there are some weird mechanical noises that I don’t understand from where that’s coming. That weird noises are not real during my recording session. Do you have any idea what could be? Have you ever experienced something like this? I’m wondering if the microphones are damaged because I used the recorder in humid environment. 🙁
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniela. You only use the XY microphones? Maybe condensation could cause this problem. I never had that issue before and I always make sure to keep the microphones together with silica bags. But you might want to reach out to the shop where you bought it or costumer support. But record a sound file and show it to them. They could give you a better answer. If you still have warranty maybe they exchange the unit.

@@FreeToUseSounds hey Marcel, yes till now I only used the built in microphones because I haven’t bought yet an external microphone. I’m still saving a bit for a proper upgrade. And yes, I still have warranty for the recorder. I bought it in summer. Out of curiosity I recently listened to my very first audio recordings I made with it, but at beginning was everything okay. After a while it started to be different. I never used the recorder in rain, I mean never had direct contact with rain, only used it under umbrella and recently used it in a pool house while recording the hot tub sounds. Even if I had all the time open windows there, it was very humid. BUT that weird noises appeared weeks before the hot tub recording session. Anyway I will do like you said and contact the support where I bought it. Hopefully they can help me somehow.

I watched your review because I'm looking for a device to record natural sounds like forest, waterfalls, rivers, birds... For video I use a Canon R7 mirrorless camera but for sound I haven't found any decent solution. Internal mics are not very good. Also tried a shoe mount mic (Deity D4 Mini) but I still get a lot of noise. Especially when I record birds I have so much background noise that I cannot use it. I've tried all kinds of settings on my camera but it seems it has bad preamps and the mic is not that great. So after watching many reviews for shoe mount mics I saw a recommendation to get a Recorder and mount it on my camera. To use it as a separate unit doesn't feel like a solution because every time I will have to match the video with the sound and I prefer to have it directly over the video for a more natural feeling. What do you think would be better, the H1 Essential recorder, the older version H1n or I would get better results with a shoe mount mic with battery power like Sennheiser MKE400 or something from Rode? Now my budget is maximum 200 but I'm planning to invest more in the future.

@@arkphotog: Yes, the Zoom H1n can work as a PC audio interface using the USB port, as well as a card reader. And yes, you can use the headphone out port to connect directly to a camera our other audio input device. The H1n can be used as a microphone or a pre-amp, or a stand alone recorder, and/or a 3.5mm and USB audio interface. It's really a must have little tool, unless of coarse you must have XLR inputs. In that case you may want to consider the H4n instead. Cheers 🍻

Hello Rob, Thanks for reaching out! Whenever I'm solely recording and not filming, I have a little practice that's saved me countless hours in post-production. At the beginning or end of each recording, I always take a moment to verbally note down key details - like what I'm capturing, the location, and the time of day. This way, when I'm sifting through hundreds of files during the editing process, I have a clear auditory marker of what each file contains. It's a simple technique but incredibly effective for keeping things organized!

@FreeToUseSounds

Hi! The Zoom H1n could do that for sure but don't be to close to the boxes. The limiter creates some extra noise but that wouldn't matter during a rock concert. Using an H2n gives you another recording option but I wouldn't handheld an H2n. Pretty sensitive so you would need to find a good location. Also keep make sure you have the rights to rock an official concert and seek permission.

I really like all your videos and to me . Please I need help . Am into travel videos and city walk . Am just wondering which one will be best and also after the record did I need to do any post production on it or just the sound from the mic quality is enough. Just like normal video we do editing and colour grading just to boost the colour. Did I need any software to mix or boost the quality?

I am Dan in Batavia New York I just ordered one I thought the sound quality by the geese was amazing.... I wonder if it's better than the sound on the camera I got the Canon 80d are my older sx60 they have pretty good sound and what is good you can set the sound.. I don't know if they would let you bring it to a concert I'd rather have the sound than stand there all day filming like people do cuz that's really annoying I honestly think people should not be allowed to just sit there and film all day because it's annoying to the people behind them and I mean I love filming I saw ACDC I did not film what I got the best picture ever when that confetti was coming down and we were far away of Angus Young we were in the nosebleed and it was a s800 Nikon junk camera

Hello, I wanted to know if it is normal after leaving a few minutes without batteries it loses the time and date. Wouldn't it have to have an internal battery to save time? I don't know if it's a defect in mine or a feature of the product.
@FreeToUseSounds

Yes, mine does that too. When restarting the H1n, the time and date shows up in the first screen right?

Thank you for your videos. (I left this note in the community post. I wasn’t sure if it was best left here). I am hoping you can help with the following: What is the cheapest Zoom device that will work on its own with its own microphones, but also allows me to: - connect 1-2 external microphones, - allow me to connect directly to a computer (pc), so that I also have the option to record directly into a computer (usb?) - connect directly to a (mirrorless) camera so the camera can make use of better mics and not have to sync. audio and video at a later time. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

After much deliberation and procrastination, I recently bought the Zoom H8. It is probably overkill for what I do, but they have come down a lot in price to the point where they are not a lot more expensive that the H5 with a lot more functionality. So hopefully I’ll grow in to it 👍

Hello i want to record ambience sound with h1n what is the best external mic?
@FreeToUseSounds
@FreeToUseSounds 2 жыл бұрын
Did you not like the ambience recordings that you could directly record with the Zoom H1n? If you want to record with an external stereo microphone that has already a battery powered solution, check out the Audio Technica 8022. But keep in mind you need wind protection too. Probably a tripod, nanopole or pistol grip as well. Do some research and look for external microphones for Zoom H1n. The Zoom H1n doesn’t supply phantom power so that’s an important factor to consider.

You have mentioned Audio Technica 8022 for recording in one of the comments. Is it a good idea that microphone on top of the camera. I have FX3 with top handle and it provides phantom power. Right now I use Rode NTG5 but that's shotgun. Works most of the time, but I want the audio to be more immersive. I am interested in capturing in ambience sounds while shooting as I am a one man band and cant carry too much equipment.

Oh this might be to heavy and with wind protection its too much. Check out the AT8024 which is perfect for this use case.

hi FTUS ! do you know a good impedance converter ? I just got the Korg CM-300 (thanks to your video btw) and when I connected it to my H5 I just had noise so I think it's a impedance issue because it works fine with my sound card
