Great to see another video. I don't really need it, but I'm curious about the H2 Essential. I had the original H2 (what I started out on), then the H2n which I used all the time because of the 15 or so hour battery life and various recording options (it meant if I only had the recorder on me I could still record therapy demonstrations. I could always have it in my pocket and record ambience and nature sounds etc), but as I progressed I wanted something with less self noise. I'm curious whether the H2 Essential has lower self noise, the battery is listed slightly shorter, so I'm curious if it hits the listed duration and if the different recording options are good. I always enjoy your videos and your presence and presenting style and look forward to new videos.

For the money, I think it's a pretty good recorder. I was expecting higher noise, but it seems to be pretty O.K. Because you were talking a lot about the suspension kit, is that something that works with any or most zooms? More specifically the H4N Pro. My guess would be yes, as it has that thing in the middle that you can screw in to, but I was wondering about it. For myself my recordings don't have too many handling sounds, just a little. It is pricey I'm seeing, but nonetheless it could be a nice little upgrade, definitely made me interested about using it =) I'm looking to build a binaural head for recording, so I want something that holds everything together to be able to walk around. I will have to rewatch your video you did with the one you have & use it as a template :) And generally for your videos, always a special treat to watch them. It's apparent that Libby loves the camera-work/videography, and you ofc on your side. Together great combination, always love to watch. And just to encourage you guys to take your own pace with your upload-schedule, I put the bell-notifications on to definitely always get notified. @FreeToUseSounds2 күн бұрын
Hello Marc! Thank you so much for watching and I believe the suspension kit for the H4n is still available, and comes with wind protection. However, if they run out of stock, they might not produce more, which is why we also recommended a more affordable option from Movo which is like a one for all kind of solution. The kit is good for holding your recorder, but if you’re using a binaural head as well, the weight might be too much. The suspension kit can tilt forward or backward if to heavy, or the suspension ring might get squeezed and become unusable. :(

Hello. So cool to see you back ;] I missed your videos, even though I have your sound library to enjoy, the new recordings are just amazing! Still been waiting to see an update since new H1 came out. I am still enjoying your previously suggested H1n ( also needs all of those small tools ), but I wanted to ask if you think the H1e is a significant upgrade to H1n? Thank you
@FreeToUseSounds7 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you so much for checking in! As for sound quality, I don’t think there will be a significant difference, but I’d like to wait until I have all the gear to make a fair comparison. We ordered an A-B stereo bar, so we’ll be able to set both recorders side by side for testing. I do think 32-bit on this small recorder is great for sound processing and having more editing flexibility. As I mentioned in another comment about recording the cannon, in the video, you only see the cannon firing. But in this continuous moment, I also recorded the bells before and after. I edited the three parts as separate tracks by normalizing them individually. The person handling the cannon left only a few seconds between the sounds, so there wasn’t time to stop, adjust gain, and restart. With 24-bit, I’d risk clipping the cannon or having the bell too low. Raising the gain on a 24-bit recording might add more noise, whereas 32-bit gives me just more headroom. We’re currently in Xiamen, but we’ll be back in Hong Kong in about a week. I’ll upload these recordings and more with a new update so you can download and check them out. For now, the internet connection isn’t strong enough to handle all these GBs of files. You get the Gumroad newsletter right?

Hello. Can you please describe to me what a susspention kit is as I am totally blind and can't see the screne. I love your work.
@FreeToUseSounds7 күн бұрын
Hi there! Absolutely! A suspension kit acts as a buffer between your hand and the recorder, which helps minimize handling noise. When you hold a handy recorder directly and walk while recording, it can pick up rumble and unwanted noises from the movement. With a suspension kit, you can easily avoid this. We use one from Rycote, which is quite pricey, and some models aren’t even available anymore. But I found a budget-friendly alternative from Movo that offers options for the H1n, H1e, and other smaller field recorders. If you’re aiming for cleaner audio, I highly recommend getting one. Also, I’ve been in touch with Radius Windshields, and hopefully, they’ll develop their own version soon. Let me know if that helps, or feel free to message me here on KZbin if you have more questions!

@FreeToUseSounds9 күн бұрын
Hi! This is a tough one because I wanted to wait until I have my A-B stereo bar to start comparing. Not having gain control on the H1e is something I need to get used to. Recording in default mode on the spot means more work for me in post, but I enjoy the editing process much more now than I did two years ago. The sound quality may not be drastically different, but with the cannon example, I would have to set the gain low with the H1n and maybe use a limiter. Since there was also a bell ringing, if I recorded it in 24-bit and later cut the file to create separate parts, I’d likely introduce noise when raising the level. With the 32-bit, I split the recording into three parts-1. Bell Ring Before, 2. Cannon Fire, and 3. Bell Ring After-without having to stop the recording and adjust the levels each time. So, with 32-bit, I ended up with three separate files, all properly normalized.

Hi. Fun that you’re back. The handling noise of this recorder is really awful. Yes one can use a tripod or similar, but it really not a good look for a recorder in 2024. The screen is… the less said the better. Respectfully, I’m a bit surprised that you’re as positive/neutral about it as you are. Suggesting multiple purchases of additional gear to compensate for the recorder’s short comings is IMHO justifying a poor product. Hand on heart, do you really recommend this product? ;)
@FreeToUseSounds6 күн бұрын
Hi! Absolutely, I’d recommend this recorder for anyone interested in getting started with sound recording. It may not come with add-ons anymore, but the sound quality it delivers is good. It’s also good to keep in mind that many recorders and microphones, including models like the older Zoom H1n, Tascam X6, and X8, no longer come with extras like wind protection or suspension kits. Are these now poor product? Even our microphones from Schoeps or Sennheiser-which can cost thousands-don’t include wind protection. For those, an additional investment in accessories, sometimes ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, is common. So, while it might be an extra cost, for anyone looking to pursue sound recording seriously, investing in extra accessories is part of getting the best results possible.
@orvet6 күн бұрын
@ Thank you for your thoughtful reply. As a starter piece of kit, ok it may have a place. In response to your, possibly rhetorical, question if a lack of wind protection makes the Tascam x6 and others a poor product: No, but those are not laden with all the negatives of the reviewed product. We respectfully disagree with each other on what a good recorder should be, and that’s fine.

Hi! Thanks for pointing that out-it’s a fair critique. Handling noise can definitely be an issue with handy recorders, especially when used without stabilization. That’s actually one of the reasons I moved away from handheld recording as even the best handy recorders can pick up handling noise. In our video, we showcased gear designed to avoid these issues. If handling noise is affecting your recordings, you could consider investing in equipment that minimizes it. If you’re after cleaner sound, a bit of an upgrade can make a big difference. 😊

The shoreline you mentioned actually does have industrial sounds nearby-there was a factory just to the left. Speaks volumes to me that you need so many addons to get this device to function properly. Failed board room product imo.

I hear you, and I agree that it would be great if these devices came with some basics included. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common these days. The good news is that you don’t need all the add-ons we use, and the online market offers plenty of options to make it more cost-effective, letting you customize the setup you need.
