How to play on Maracas - hand technique in Mambo & Salsa styles

In this video, I show the technique of playing Maracas in the styles of Mambo and Salsa. Note the technique of the right hand, which uses a movement called "Down-Up" when playing the reels.
That is, the sound is played not only when the hand moves down, but also when the hand is raised - with a swing. This allows you to achieve the necessary speed when playing in the Mambo and Salsa styles.

Thank you for your response. So, there are no harmonies between both maracas? I work more with the Puertorican bomba maraca and I find it amazing. There are things going on inside the gourd that most likely only you can hear. Very commonly the maracas are discarded and underestimated like undeserving of aspring divas of the lead drums. I consider them to be magical, right along the chekeres, the berimbau, the puertrican guiro. Democratic, very inexpensive, you throw them in your back pack together with a sandwich or a hamburger. Yes, ideally they should sound the same, but if there is a slight difference, it is not critical. Maracas are a super tool, there are many varieties of them, although many people think that they are just rattles. I was particularly struck by the Colombian maracas, they are the biggest and the way the masters masterfully handle them is simply amazing.

@@Drums-and-Percussion-Grooves Thanks a lot keeps flowing because I did not know about the Colombian maracas and maraqueros. The Venezuelans mount a mean number over a huge variety of sizes. Their clasical ensembles with harp and cuatro venezolano are very rithmically rich, so you cannot go into it with marshmellow maraca patterns. Blessings to you.

to answer your question because it seems the author didn’t understand it, the high pitched maraca is held in the right hand and the low in the left. If you’re dominant hand is left then invert it. The higher pitch one is the one most commonly used for phrasing and “repiques” hope this helps.

Вопрос: пара маракасов (не сувенирные, а музыкальные), один тяжелее другого в 2 раза из-за большего количества шумящего наполнителя. Это так и должно быть? Они в паре разные? Спасибо

Добрый день, маракасы должны быть одинаковые. Можно выровнить между ними наполнитель, пересыпав из тяжёлого в легкий, так они будут правильнее звучать.

Там после снятия декоративных гвоздиков под ними обнаружилось еще 2 плоских пластины, вбитых в ручку западлицо, сидящих плотно и фиксирующих чашу. Вся конструкция выглядит малопригодной к разборке. Поэтому и возник вопрос... Оба маракаса без видимых признаков внешнего вмешательства. Но по весу разница значительная. Звук тоже, естественно, в одном чуть басовитей... Хотя если его в сильную долю запускать, как-то даже сочно звучит. Вот и думай.... пересортица или задумка конструкции....

@@YumOboz да, интересный случай. Иногда такой прием с разными звуками в руках используется, например в одной руке caxixi а в другой шейкер. Получается интересная фактура, дополнительный акцент к шейкеру.
