Since you're having to wait a while to rehydrate the pancakes, try taking Krusteaz brand mix, already a powder and just needs water They are the perfect pancake. Also vacuum seals well, but not sure how long it keeps long term.

Good way to reconstitute bread is to get a paper towel and get it wet. Squeeze out most of the moisture and put it down, lay the pancake on top, put another towel on top. Put it in the microwave for about 12-18 seconds and it will steam it right back up.

Just watched this video and you mentioned reconstituting pancakes. I use a spray bottle to spritz water on products such as thin slices of roast and then being able to use in sandwiches. This way it doesn't have excess water. This should work for the pancakes.

Found your channel while doing research on freeze driers. Can't wait for mine to get in. One thing to consider instead of Maple syrup is to use honey. You don't need to freeze dry it and it will keep by itself, other than possibly crystallizing. All you need then is some low heat to turn to liquid again. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

The problem with the orange juice is likely the sugar concentration not sugar content, it should freeze dry if you split that bottle of juice among two or even three trays and then add water to fill the trays this will drastically reduce the sugar concentration of the trays by diluting it allowing it to freeze at higher temps. This should work as well with the syrup if diluted enough it should dry.

I ruined the juice of 40 lemons trying to freezedry the juice and wish I could have read this prior to my freeze-drying. I froze the juice and then put the frozen bricks into the freezedryer. It came out way to sticky and even with increased drying it still didn't come out. Have you done lemon juice and did it work with diluting it in water so that it will freeze dry? I ultimately was thinking I could make a powder of it for long storage.

You might try brown sugar and a bottle or two of maple extract mixed in a bowl then put on pan freeze, then freeze dry. Not sure if it would work but it might be worth a try. Brown sugar is a sucrose and is a little gummy because it has molasses in it. The extract is liquid but the grains of sugar should absorb it along with the flavor and then the liquid should be extracted in the drying process. Worth looking at. I do not have a freeze dryer so let me know if you try it and it works.

For my sausage and hamburger patties, after cooking/browning, I put them in my vegetable steamer. I constantly flip them until I'm not really seeing so much grease rendered out. After drying, they are great and there is still enough oil left for good flavor. Breakfasts are one of my favorite things to store up. BTW - maple syrup was a great idea, but it or honey really doesn't spoil if kept closed so mold doesn't get in. I tend to rehydrate everything I can with hot water in Thermos food jars or a thermal cooker like a Shuttle Chef. It stays hot and you don't have to tend it while it gets ready on its own. You can re-brown or crisp if needed when you take them out. This method is even handier with already prepared meals like soups, chili, spaghetti, or chicken-a-la-king (which is my favorite), as you can put the FD in the bottle with the hot water, throw it in your pack and viola! it's ready later when you want it. Thanks for your content!

Some ideas: 1) maybe prick the sausage links with a fork before cooking to allow more fat to escape. 2) cook all the meats on a wire rack in a rimmed baking sheet in the oven because laziness. 3) maybe pre-freeze the maple syrup in a small cooler with dry ice? If that doesn't work, add the maple syrup directly to the pancake batter

Thanks for the info Kevin! I have slit the casing on the sausage, hot dogs etc. and it works much better. allowing the meat to drip the oil off helps as well. As for syrup, there's just to much sugar in it and it doesn't do well.

As it turned out, I was retired in my 40s, though still available for contract work (IT), and my wife continued into her 50s in IT before fully retiring. I congratulate you on retiring at 40. So many people just live at the edge of their income, reinforcing their role as "wage slaves", and then whine when they see people who have broken free of that through their own choices. My wife and I are now both in our 50s, fully retired, with zero debt, and living full-time in a "5th wheel toy-hauler" RV, moving wherever we want to, living however we want. We can't freeze dry, since we have no fixed location and very little carrying capacity, but one day we'll "settle down" again and go back to gardening, providing more of our own needs. I love watching people providing for themselves, not buying into the rat race.

Well said. We got bored pretty fast with full retirement and had to find a hobby. KZbin was a fun one and has helped cure my boredom. We also have toyed around with the idea of traveling in an ec for awhile. Our kids would have to be pulled from school otherwise we are dependant on the school schedule. I am glad to hear of others that were able to beat the system!

@@live.life.simple. From what I've seen, a lot of RVers with kids homeschool them. When our daughter was young (she's 37 now!), we looked into homeschooling, but the available materials were very limited, and mostly oriented at things we didn't want. That's changed a lot now, with a lot more, and more varied homeschooling help. That said, it's still a lot more work to homeschool than to send your kids to public schools. On the other hand, it means not subjecting them to whatever the local school board thinks is appropriate. I don't know what I'd do if I had school-aged children now.

Isn't maple syrup kind of like honey in that its sugar content is so high in proportion to the amount of water that it doesn't spoil? You could probably can it or seal it in retort pouches and pasteurize it to kill off any bacteria. From that point it should last a very, very long time.

When i purchased my dryer they were phasing out the old JB pumps (which is probably why i thought i was getting such a great deal). Shortly after i got it i had to send it back to be refurbished and have not had a problem since. When it decides to crap out i'll probably buy one of their new pumps or get a commercial quality one.

It would have been interesting if you had taken these and reconstituting while camping. I am not sure that I would have called this a success. I fry bigger links and always slice them midway in the cook and then flip them to the fry side and they get crispy.

Yoder’s canned bacon is cooked, wrapped up in paper towels and heat sealed (I read, and think). It’s very oily when you open it, but still states a shelf life of 10 years. I’m not sure but if it doesn’t go rancid then why would yours?

Another great video. I wonder, have you thought about just FD turkey bacon and turkey sausage? I mean it's not bacon BACON of course, but it doesn't have the grease, and for long term storage, it would be better than nothing and definitely better than real bacon that has spoiled due to grease. Plus I bet it would taste pretty darn good in a long term emergency when you've gone without many comfort foods we're all so used to having any time we want them. As far as breads or pancakes, I wonder if putting them in a gallon zip lock bag with wet paper towels, before going to bed, if that would bring everything up to the moisture level you're looking for? Let the breads slowly, over night, absorb moisture at its own rate. It might be a good experiment to do during the day and check it every hour or so and get some idea how long it takes or even if it will work. I'm really enjoying these types of videos and sharing ideas. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the support. I will try a few different things to get bread-like foods to rehydrate. I REALLY want them to work. I will try turkey bacon and sausage at some point with some more breakfast foods as well. I still think they will have a lot of grease though. No doubt a hearty breakfast would be the highlight of your day in an emergency or crisis.

I buy the fully cooked turkey sausage and freeze dry that. It works really well. You are right in that there is no grease to be had. I've also tried fully cooked ham sausage but even that has a little more grease than I want. So, I will try the method from this video. I may have to cook the "fully cooked" ham sausage to get more of the grease out of it using the method from above.

How about buying Maple Sugar (Amazon cheapest is a bit over $12.00/lb in a 3 lb container) and just adding a wee bit of hot water as needed. I haven't tried this and relating it to sugar and trying to make a thick syrup, using this may not work. One could bump up the sugar content of regular maple syrup with this to make a more storage stable item I would think but again, I have not tried this. In a pinch, I would be happy with jam or a fruit concentrate as syrup. Butter is what I would miss and that can be purchased, FDed, that tastes great. I don't know what "they" are doing to get a "FD butter" but it is really tasty. My daughter uses the FD butter on popcorn and her family LOVES it. I bought a case of large cans of it before I got my FDer and have repackaged it in smaller amounts in Mylar bags for inclusion in food packs that would benefit having butter... ie pancakes!!!!!!!

@@jdcitizen I like the FD butter too and wish I knew how they did it. Too much fat for my FDer. Same with the peanut butter. I read somewhere that you can mix those with coconut oil and they are close to the original but I haven't tried it yet. I have read that coconut oil keeps for a very long time. I haven't tried the maple sugar but used to buy it shaped in different shapes and I loved it. I can't remember if it tasted like maple or not but that is a very good idea!!! I would think the less water mixed in the thicker the syrup would be.
