God its amazing , you learn something everyday. I used to use flash all the time (SB800s) and set up a home studio, I wanted better results so bought a studio light kit, recently I have been trying to freez motion again as in dance,, karate kicks etc etc and with the SB800s its was simple, Now using my studio lights I have struggled to understand why I was not 'freezing' the subject, I asked at my local camera club and failed to get the answer,, Gavin you have just answered it for me,, Studio lights are no where near as fast as my SB800s... big thanks.. Back to the strobes for me then

@TALKCalgary Well, Canon doesn't have a built in radio trigger. The 580EX has Infra Red which is great, but that requires line of sight. So the second flash (behind the model) wouldn't trigger.

buggy831: Not quite right. Flash duration is a time measure taken from a flash between it reaching 50% of its peak value to the point when it has diminished to the same value. A shorter flash duration freezes moving objects, a longer flash duration causes them to blur.

Lots of good cameras around today. Choose one you can afford / upgrade. If your friends/family have one brand buy that so you can swap gear. Honestly, the camera you own is a lot less important then learning to see photos around you.
@GavinHoey15 жыл бұрын
As far as i know the 40D has always been able to use High Speed sync with Canon Speedlites. Mine does. High speed sync wouldn't have helped here as HS is multiple burst of light which could cause blur. BTW the Pocket Wizard flash triggers are also High Speed Sync compatible meaning you can sync them at 1/1000 sec if you want.

To anyone that responds, I like Gav as well. I am also a professional in the photography world and photoshop. He's really informative and it's nice to see some one share such knowlege. Maybe they don't have Girls Gone Wild in Europe or maybe be doesn't know what it is.

@pofrani Nothing to do with recycling time, the flash from the flashgun lasts a tad longer than studio lights and therefore throws more light onto the subject for longer and allows for a sharper brighter image.

The PW's have been pretty good as long as they have fully charged batteries. I updated the firmware right before this video and they performed a lot better! Yep, she's growing up really fast!

Hi Gavin, Verry usefull tutorial. Just a little question about the lightning. For the masterlight there is ETTL used. But what settings do you used for the background? I hope to hear soon! :-) Just keep up the good work for tutorails. They are the best can found on the web! :-) Regards, Sander
@Jjsh2414 жыл бұрын
Nice Videos! I do however think that e-TTL is shooting hot. The background is so bright its wrapping around her in some places. Another factor is that she's also so close to it. The originals probably look better but I just thought I'd point it out.

Gavin, you look like you're having fun making these videos and that makes it fun to watch. Your model is growing like a weed since your last video you made on shooting white backgrounds. Question: how reliable are you finding those mini PWs to be?
@stubones15 жыл бұрын
Hi Gavin, have Canon brought out a firmware update for the 40D which allows hi-speed synch with the speedlights? I got new firmware for my 50D which allowed the flash to synch at 1/500th. cheers

Having video withdrawal Gavin! When will you be uploading another 15 minute challenge or some other video? You must be busy. Either that or winter has slowed your shooting opportunities. How to see more soon. :)

@danelovell I've done work for GGW. I'm almost 100% sure it is the theme song... However, I'm a HoeyHead, a Gavin follower if you will. I've liked all his videos thus far. I'm a pro photographer (meaning I get paid a few times a week to shoot models) and still I find his tutorials helpful and informative. That being said... I'll still watch his videos... even thought that song is a bit creepy in this video. LOL. But otherwise good work as always Gav.
