Nice review and watching your videos is always a pleasure. I already own a F11 Lassie (smal messenger bag) for maybe 12 years. And I still use it. It's solid, reliable and waterproof. I just ordered this F748 Coltrane to use it with my Brompton (and like a normal backpack if I remove the frame for the days when I will not use my Brompton). Yes the price is high (very high), but I know this bag will last for a very very long time.

Thanks for the comment Chantal! I couldn't agree more. It is very expensive but if one commutes to work with a Brompton this is a really nice bag that you can use every single day for many many years. Thanks.

I'm in two minds about this bag. I think on one hand it's a great size and the way it flips between being on the bike or your back is a cool feature (I hope Brompton consider putting this feature on all new bags in the future as this will appeal to urban commuters). I like the unique design, eco credentials (why is eco so expensive???) and attention to detail too. I'm stunned by the price though considering this is second hand tarp and I know it is designed in Switzerland but would be surprised if it is manufactured there too as there are cheaper countries for labour in the EU. I own a Brompton already and love it and I also have a Freitag RFID wallet and think both products are fantastic with a story behind the respective brands. I'm not going to buy this bag but will see how Brompton take on some of these design features in the future.

Thanks for the comment Lee. I suppose they are not marketed for the price-conscious, but I believe they are actually produced in Zurich therefore the added cost. Some of the price is reflected in the quality of build and even with recycled material I suppose there are costs in bringing them back to a quality that can be repurposed and sold. I think the bag works so well because of the shoulder straps that are made of recycled seatbelts. They are really thin but tough and can lie flat on the back of the bike without any protruding parts. As you say every Brompton cycling bag would really benefit from this feature!

Demano make similar Brompton bags from recycled materials. They don't have all the features of the Freitag bag but are half the price and might be a good option as a cheaper alternative. I have had one of their bags for my (pre-covid) daily commute and love it. if I was starting from scratch I would take a good look at the Freitag bag, but I can't justify the cost to replace my perfectly good existing bag.

Freiteg is a swiss company manufacturing in Switzerland, therefore labour costs are relevant. Further it uses recycled material made from trucks. Than it is a unique object. If I didn’t have already three original brompton bags, I’d get one.

It's a topic that comes up every now and then and a very sensitive one, as people have different ideas about it. Personally I do use it if I ride in a city in traffic, but I don't while touring. It is a risk I take for the comfort of having something that keeps me cool ( a brim hat soaked in water ) and in the shade or a woollen hat for the cold times. Many thanks for sharing your thought.

I thought the same when I saw myself entering the train! Just to say these were quick shots where I walked in and out of a train and I completely forgot about it... The only shot in the building is a lift in a private property and it was a quick shot making sure nobody was around. Cheers

Hi. Nice to see your latest video. Another reviewer of the bag mentioned that the plastic frame was not comfortable for him when worn as a back pack. Was that an issue for you? And, if you take-off the frame what do you do with it? I think he suggested that the company place the frame structurally inside the bag itself. Does Brompton initiate contact with you and ask you to review it? Thanks, Steve from Maine USA
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, thanks for the comment. As I mention at the start of the video the bag was sent from Freitag to me for testing. I did see the other review and I suppose we might have different views on that as I do say in my video that I actually found it pretty comfortable even with the frame as it is. I think putting the frame inside would not be practical because there is a plastic part at the bottom of the frame that needs to be exposed in order to clip to the Brompton front carrier. To keep water out of the bag it could be set into its own compartment I suppose but then I think I rather have this because you can take the frame off very easily. The only reason to take off the frame is to give you an option to have a plain backpack for those times you don't use the Brompton. Cheers.

Great review. It looks like it uses different zippers than their other bags. Seems odd they’d switch away from waterproof zippers for a bag like this. Can you comment on the zippers? Would you trust a laptop in this bag through rain?
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It seems you have more experience with the bags than I have. This is the first Freitag I have tested. If you see the close up and how the zippers are there is place where there is a divider between two zippers. This has a tiny opening. The zipper that is at the rear to easily access the laptop compartment is sideways and therefore less prone to let water in. Laptop compartment inside further protect the laptop. I did cycle in the rain and the bag inside stayed dry but I think it is not 100% waterproof but rather water repellant. It does a good job in light rain I would say but if I was to cycle long in heavy rain I might want a further rain cover which can be bought really cheap. Given the material is otherwise waterproof I am not sure why they decided to use those zippers. Cheers

300 × 150 × 450 mm (l × w × h) Weight: 1400 g Volume: 19 l Nice bag, and concept, but with these dimensions this bag cannot be used as a free carry on luggage on low cost airlines. It is too big for everyday commute. Is too wide, but also too thin for bringing more staff (touring), also it also seems to be unfit for being used with Luggage Trolley. Not waterproof, but stiff nonetheless. So nice design bag, but will skip it, not practical enough, but very expensive (more expensive than an O bag)
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
I would be surprised if any cost airline wouldn't allow this size of bag as a free carry on luggage... They do advertise limits in sizes but this one is a pretty compact backpack when on your shoulders. Also, if you fly with the bike and check that in, you can remove the aluminium frame easily and I have no doubt the bag would squeeze in any of those size-testing frames that they use at airport. I wouldn't want to fly with an airline refusing this size of bag anyway! :) Thanks for the comment. As far as touring it is obviously not as capable as others but if you were to use some saddle bike packing system together with this you would be able to carry enough stuff to do trips while staying in hotels at night. It is at its best as a day commuting or weekend break bag.
@anonymusmester
@anonymusmester 3 жыл бұрын
@@BromptonTraveler Yes, but that means that you cannot bring the frame with you. FYI: WIZZAIR: 40 x 30 x 20 cm RYANAIR: 40 x 20 x 25cm EASYJET: 45 x 36 x 20 cm so for Easyjet it works (but I hardly travel with them). Unfortunately not flying with those is not really a choice. So I might have overestimated the stiffness, but I still maintain that the size is not practical (but of course the concept is).

I went through 2 actually! Not that I normally do that. The one at Buckingham palace was a red light but road closed to traffic. The one in Piccadilly is a tricky one for cyclists as there is no incoming traffic from a side road.

My friend when you are cycle touring abroad anywhere on open area, It's a big different, And you know that fact well. Also in a bit of windy day in urban area, it's very difficult cycling like that. I am not a race cyclist either. I even never had race bike. It's not my style, and very bad for my severe low back problems. This pannier is really extremely increase the drag. And it's even in front of the rider....
@stephenschuit7880
@stephenschuit7880 3 жыл бұрын
It's simply not a pannier. It's like calling a bike seat a chair. I've used bags on the front of my Brompton for almost a decade. The design, where it sits on the frame, not the handle bars, is quite a nice design feature. The only drawback is that on windy days it creates a bit of resistance. Otherwise, my bags hold more than most panniers in terms of total capacity.
