We are investigating the FREMM-class, a.k.a. Aquitaine-class and Bergamini-class, the dazzling frigate with its capabilities and export successes. #fremm #frigate #warship
Which developments paved the way for the joint development of the FREMM-class ships?
What are the features of the frigate?
Why did Australia and Canada choose the Type-26-class vessels instead of the FREMM-class?
Why did Egypt, Indonesia, Morocco, and the U.S.A. prefer the FREMM-class frigate?

Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books, and they tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyses them, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. While the Second Cold War is rising, Let's investigate the weapons together.

Thank you for such a thorough information on FREMM class frigates. As an Indonesian I am glad that our MoD and navy have selected and purchased 6 Bergamini class from Italy. And I read in an article that at least two the the ships will be built in PT PAL's facilities in Surabaya, Indonesia. Hope the procurement process will run smootly so that not before long our naval engineers at PT PAL will get valuable transfers of knowledge and skills. Again, thank you for the video. Two thumbs-up!! 👍👍

as a Greek, what propably killed our FREMMs was the economic crisis of the 2010s. just before our economy went to the trash, our military press says that a deal was almost signed. But since they were no funds in the end, it never went forward.... it's a shame

It would very interesting to expand on this side by side comparison in capabilities and costs between FREMM, the Type 26, the PPA and the FDI, may be expanding to the Horizon/Type 45 class. Apparently the top navies prefer to purchase more smaller and cheaper ships then focussing on more capable but more expensive ones as did France with the FDI and Italy with the PPA sidestepped from the FREMM procurement. I don't recall hearing the Bergamini being faster then the Aquitaine: both should be at 27 knots maximum as what determines the speed of a ship is the hull shape, with significant differences in power being required to increase the maximum speed to 30 knots. Italy switched to the PPA class to have faster ships able to patrol vast areas of the Mediterranean while the FREMM are intended as point AA defences ship for the fleet in conjunction with the more capable Horizon class or as off shore strike group blockading an enemy coastline in case of the Multi Purpose version
@lucaiervasi8515
@lucaiervasi8515 Жыл бұрын
the French version is rated 27+. the Italian version 31+. the difference is in the propulsion system, of the Italian isotta fraschini engines for the Italian units and of the French MTU for the French units. the geometry of the propellers also appears to be different. I believe this difference is dictated by the different needs of the two navies. the cavour aircraft carrier travels at 29 knots, the ships escorting it must have her speed. the French aircraft carrier travels at 27 knots. most likely and this is why.

Excellent video. As a Turkish, I agree with your comment. A little note: The Aquitaine-class ships have a hull number starting with D, just like destroyers. It is weird but common for the French Navy to use confusing definitions. The Georges Leygues and Tourville-class vessels are also referred to as the F70-class and F67-class. The letter "F" is the initial of the French word "frégate", meaning frigate, but they are destroyers with a hull number starting with D.
@olivierpuyou3621

Indeed we use the term Frigate because the term destroyer is English. In WWII these ships were either "contre torpilleurs" pour les plus petites or "croiseurs léger ou rapides" for the bigger ones.
@coyotesweg3129
@coyotesweg3129 Жыл бұрын
@@olivierpuyou3621 to clarify : « Torpilleurs » was the French term for what was considered as a destroyers by English standard, where as « contre-torpilleur » was a class of ship specific to the french navy : they were designed to hunt and destroy Italian destroyers thanks to their Light cruiser caliber guns, and out run anything bigger than them. (Mogador .. ) But buy simplification the English call them destroyer leader or light cruiser.

In France, we never named Destroyer like english, we said "contre-torpilleurs" previously of the WWII... In fact, the french contre-torpilleurs were a mixed between Destroyers and light cruiser.. .they were more powerful than Destroyers and faster than Cruisers. Frigates in french is then correct as Destroyers doesn't exist in french language... we have different sort of Frigates (anti-sous-marine, Anti-aérienne and now FREMM to combine those both sorts... but French navy has never had Destroyers)

I think you got the air and surface ranges of the Aquitaine's S band Heracles radar mixed up. 80km for air and 250+km for surface are woefully low for the first, and (due to the curvature of the earth) physically impossible for the second.

In the past, the 2 manufacturers, Thales and Leonardo, had specified that the French and Italian radars are almost identical. On the net you can only find that the maximum range of the Herakles is 250+km(unofficial) but on Leonardo's official website it says that the Kronos Grand Naval(MFRA) has a range of >300km. I believe that both radars have a range of more than 300km but it is not specified why the data must remain classified.

Possible Disadvantages of the Class: 1) Rotating AESA + Rotation 3D Antenna in combination is one Gen behind unmoving 4 plate AESA Systems common on US/CHN Radar Systems... so 180 Deg FOV is in shadow at any time of rotation, which decreases 3D Situational processing Awareness. Additionally the Missile Guidande Radar is also a moving dish device...not as advanced as e.g. APAR II with 4 fixed sysstems, 360 coverage and more missiles guidance in many directions at the same time. 2) Two Types of AAW Missiles does not bring in sheer mass of missiles...32 VLS can accomodate only 32 Aster 15/30 A similar size 32 Cell MK41 can accomodate up to 128 ESSM or 16 SM-2 and 64 ESSM. 3) The sheer height and size of the Combinded Mast and Sensor means better detection for enemy Radar and some more (not much due to plastic housings, but countable) top heavy Masses in bad weather conditions. State of the art in Frigate/Destroyer size shipbiulding are slim, short designs (Japanese Mogami class, CHN Type 50, future GER F-126) with as less as antennas and masts as possible.

@@aizseeker3622 that what I ment, currently there seems to be a gap between Tomahawk and 5 inch gun. Yep. The Bergamini class is equipped with 76mm Strales ammo and 127mm Vulcano shells, both radio/IR/GPS guided ammos. Developed and produced by Oto Melara, Italy. (Are the same Vulcano shells 155mm of Oto Melara that Ukrainians today are using in their howitzer to precisely and sistematically destroying Russian Tanks and towed artillery, alongside the US Himars). So the Bergamini don't need tons of VLS cells, it use the 127mm Vulcano guided shells, that are de facto mini missiles without engines, to destroy large ships or ground targets, leaving the VLS with Aster 15 and 30 for more serious situation, when they really need to use a missile and not wasting it. The perfect armament fit.

the Indian Navy could seriously do with a fleet of 18 brand new FREMM II (Italian variant) class 6,893 ton (8,205 ton loaded) stealth guided missile multi mission advanced warfare frigate powered by cutting edge iSMARTFuelCell® HYBRId™ FEP system (instead of the CODLAG power pack) . . . speculated unit cost €563 Mn - €842 Mn (approx) a piece . . . local assembly (from CKD & SKD kits) of 5 of the 18 frigates in India will bring down the unit price considerably . . . in the post 2020 era it has to be understood that be it the Indian Navy or some foreign navy, through private sector equity participation in naval procurement such high capital intensive acquisitions projects can be realized without having to break the bank or blow the defense budget of a country . . . the Italian Navy could do with an additional fleet of 12 brand new (upgraded) FREMM II class iSMARTFuelCell® HYBRId™ FEP powered 6,893 ton (8,205 ton loaded) stealth guided missile multi mission advanced warfare frigates . . .

Thanks to the Constellation type, frigates of this type will be the most used ships of this class in the world. Ships of this type will over time replace the old, much, larger and more expensive E. Burke destroyers in the US Navy, the fact that this is a proven and successful project will make the US Navy more than once again increase the original order.

It's probable that the A. Burke-class will remain in small numbers in the US Navy for a while despite the new additions of our frigates and Destroyers of new generation. After all, the Burke is basically a light cruiser.

It depends on the choice, it's optional. The 32 VLS(16 A50+16 A70) are foreseen only for the Greek FDI, the Kimon Class🇬🇷. For now, only 16 VLS A50 are planned for French FDI, Class Amiral Ronarc'h🇫🇷.

I am really annoyed by the irresponsability of european governments of 10 years ago, cutting budget on those projects, lowering the orders, therefore making them more costly... Now France developped the FDI and by 2023 is likely to order several more (3 to 5) but so much money and time lost just to mis management...

What about their other NATO counterparts, such as the current Type 23 and the future Type 26 Global Combat Ship (so called City Class multipurpose frigates), by not mentioning the F123 Brandenburg-Class and F124 Sachsen-Class current German Navy frigates (both of them slated to be replaced by the new F126 in joint development by Dutch Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and the German Shipbuilding company Blohm + Voss).

I imagine myself already when I was eustatic to decide about the Baths The Italians wanted bidets and the French didn't Their quarrels are practically mythical between the two sweethearts and practically seeing them fight is then the fun for all of Europe
