Fremont is a city in the county seat of Sandusky County, Ohio. In 1849 the residents changed the name "Lower Sandusky" to Fremont. The city of Fremont is known for the Battle of Fort Stephenson, a historic battle of the war of 1812. Fremont was home to many Wyandot Indians, and the home to the 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. President Rutherford B. Hayes served as President from 1877 to 1881. Fremont is also home to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential center, the first Presidential library and museum. President and Mrs. Hayes are buried within the grounds of Spiegel Grove along with a few family pets, such as Old Whiety the Presidents horse. Spiegel Grove was originally 125 acres that Hayes uncle, Sardis Birchard purchased for purpose of building a home there. He called it Spiegel Grove because he considered it "The Grove of Good Spirits". When entering the Spiegel Grove it is very picturesque full of trees and pathways a park like setting, many people are just walking the trails with there families and pets. You can tour the Presidential home and Library Museum for a fee. I was able to tour the Library Museum but the home was closed. I found it very interesting and would encourage anyone in the area to visit Fremont, Ohio. The city is pretty large and has a historical downtown, many of the homes are in a historical district. They have beautiful architect.
