Live electronic artists sometimes are indeed just faking it, like any lipsync Madonna-type. But the typical way is that they basically remix their songs on stage. Some can completely deconstruct the songs and mesh them into almost new tracks that were never heard before. If you understand audio samples & intricate effects as their own "instrument", then conceptually it is no different than a live band re-interpreting music that already exists as records or on sheet music. Just with different tools.
