French army in Mali 2017 : on the road to hell !

"Le terrain commande !" is a common saying in the French military. You can translate it as "the ground commands" or rather as "Welcome to the real world !". War is not just about commandos and epic infantry assaults like those we love watching in cinema. It is a massive logistical operation. Water, food, gas, mechanical parts and vehicles, ammunitions and equipment, many wars were lost due to poor logistical planning and organization. I translated this interesting documentary about the logistical effort of the French army in Mali in early 2017, in the framework of Opération Barkhane. I hope you'll appreciate it and you'll better understand the role and difficulties of this mission.
Opération Barkhane is a French-led operation taking place in Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad. It was launched on August 1, 2014 and has been tasked with fighting islamist insurgency in Sahel region, after the victorious offensive to recapture Northern Mali from these groups (Opération Serval).
This video is a tribute to all those who were physically or psychologically wounded in this operation and also to the 11 French soldiers killed in this operation since August 1, 2014:

Bonjour, je vous dis oui et non. Je lutte contre le "French bashing", cette campagne de dénigrement de la France, notamment de son armée. Je suis bien conscient que certains ici ne sont que des trolls. En réalité, je supprime les commentaires quand ce ne sont que de vulgaires insultes (ça arrive régulièrement) mais quand la personne donne une opinion fausse mais largement répandue, je préfère prendre le temps de répondre, pas tellement pour elle mais pour les autres qui peuvent avoir des doutes, en particulier des Français qui aiment leur armée mais qui sont déroutés par ce dénigrement systématique. Je n'ai pas l'intention de laisser le point aux idiots. J'aime mettre en valeur notre armée et son histoire et je défendrai leur honneur à mon petit niveau. Amitiés :)

John RAMBO Je suis 100% avec notre armée et d’ailleurs je vais essayé d’y rentrer mais désolé, notre armée n’est clairement pas surentraînée, elle est parfois même sous-entraînée et mal dirigée malheureusement... ( exception faite pour nos incroyables commandos, armés de l’air et marine, c’est surtout l’armée de terre qui est touchée par ce fléau en privilégiant la quantité à la qualité)

​@@Aerint Alors pas du tout... connerie sur connerie... Notre armée à un manque de budget pour utiliser ses véhicules ou du matériel, alors elle s'entraine énormément sur le physique. Si tu t'engages dans un régiment de Kassos aussi c'est normal que le physique tu en aies pas. Si tu prends une place de secrétaire c'est normal que tu aies beaucoup moins d'entrainement. Faut se renseigner avant de dire des conneries pareilles. L'armée française se base sur la qualité que la quantité va vraiment te falloir des cours. Tu n'as pour le moment jamais fait de formation MDR, Sous off ou Off tu verras que beaucoup sont recalés, partent car ils n'aiment pas ou que c'est trop dur. Va faire environ 6 mois de MDR chez les BCA, Para, Légion,... où les 11 mois de formation à L'EMHM de Chamonix pour devenir Sous-off et tu verras. Oui l'armée est en manque de moyen, oui elle est en manque d'hommes, de matériels mais elle ne recrutent pas pour recruter (Elle peut faire des exceptions si la recrue à tenue jusqu'au bout de la formation malgré ses faiblesses physiques). J'ai horreur de lire des bêtises pareilles, qui vous on était raconté par des MDR sans expériences et à qui l'armée ne leur a pas vendu la réalité qu'ils attendaient. Merci à toi de ta compréhension et fais toi ton propre avis. Compare avec les autres armées du monde qui eux on des moyens ou non.

Armée Française J’ai plusieurs membres de ma famille qui sont ( ou ont été) militaires donc je ne parle pas sans information concrète, je préfère me baser sur eux qui sont actuellement en service que sur des commentaires random comme le vôtre qui n’apportent aucune source. Bien sûr que nos parachutistes sont extrêmement bien entraînés, bien sûr que les fusillés marins et les chasseurs alpins sont extrêmement biens entraînés mais ça s’arrête là, il faut juste regarder leurs campagnes de recrutement pour comprendre.

Very engaging fly on the wall type documentary . Filmed in Mali, the remote desert backdrop is stunningly beautiful and unforgiving. We get a great sense of the level of commitment these soldiers have to their difficult and dangerous mission and how everyone must play their part, including the reporter!

Obviously, you better ask someone else but I think from what I read that it was a good rifle, although the maintenance was quite annoying compared to other rifles. Still, it was created in the 70s and the French troops have made good use of it since then, so I think it was quite a good one. Replacement is needed now but I would have liked that it was replaced by a French rifle. Alas, France does not produce any more rifles. HK 416 has been selected for its replacement.

Dear "anglophones" if you realy like factual historical news forget about lies from hollywood and co like the film Dunkerque by C.Nolan, so laughable if not irritating. The battle of France is one if not THE most "underrated" battle of WW2. 100.000 French soldiers lost there life in only 6 weeks of monstruous fights. This battle gave the opportunity for the French air force to destroy between 750 to 900 German planes. What would have been the battle of England if so many planes (and pilots) had been available...? The last battle of France in 1940 was Dunkerque. There 30.000 other French young men gave there lifes (they were 40.000 against 160.000 Germans) to protect the anglo-French and other troops retreating. Out numbered they proudly resisted the German unstopable wave. Christopher Nolan a big "Bras d'honneur" from France.
