I was at the Moulin Rouge in Paris in November 2018 and the show « Féerie » is mind blowing.... the cancan is spectacular and goes on for about 6 minutes. On the video it’s just a part of what you see at the Moulin in Paris, but still wonderful. Exquisite show and spectacular cancan ! Thanks for sharing :)

+Dennis Fossey I was just in the right place at the right time. As a person who likes making videos, I have learned over time that when an event is planned for Times Square in New York, it is usually a good event. In this case it was a Taste of France. I was just there as a regular person to film an interesting event.

varinia spartacus ... very normal. My niece was a dancer at the Moulin Rouge during the late1970’s beginning 1980’s and she is a classically trained ballet dancer. Her dream was to become a dancer at the prestigious Lido De Paris or the infamous Moulin Rouge. She retired at the Moulin at age 32 and is now in her 60’s. She’s still a very elegant woman, slim and takes good care of herself. The high kicks and splits did not affect her health in any way. She’s still active as a choreographer.

@@SoulMoonChild54 I agree with you and I even think that French Cancan is great for the health of the girls. It's a very active dance, almost a sport. It sculpts their body, strengthens their legs, improves their balance and their endurance. It makes them splendid. And they seem to have a lot of fun! Congratulations for your niece.

Patrick Northrup ; the cancan actually finds its origin in Paris France in the 19th century, during the Belle Époque. There were the so called “Bals” (Parisian folk cabarets) where the “blanchiseuses de Montmartre” (the laundresses of Montmartre) launched this dance. It was mostly danced at carnaval because the dance in that period of time was scandalous, was a mockery against the church and the clergy, and was considered obscene. In the dance you can see how the girls showed their “derrières” which was code for a middle finger to society. You can also see in the video how they put their feet together and bend backwards to end in a split. This pose is called « la Cathédrale » (the cathedral) and was to mock the church and clergy. So yes, you’re right, it used to be a vulgar dance in a way. But still, it became more and more popular and right now in 2019 at the Moulin Rouge in Paris (or... BAL du Moulin Rouge), which is the most famous nightclub in the entire world, the cancan is still danced and has now become a very classy (and very difficult) dance. Many ballets all over the globe try very hard to dance a good cancan, yet few succeeded... did you know that the music the girls (and boys, as it’s danced by both) dance to has barely changed ? Did you know that the dresses are fully hand made and weigh over more than 20 kg ? If ever you are in Paris, please go see the show, you won’t regret it !

@@SoulMoonChild54 Yes, it was a mockery against clergy but also against army. The "port d'arme" is a move similar to holding a gun in a parade.
