Because the French guy literally translates every word. "I agree" in French = Je suis d'accord = Je (I) suis (am) d'accord (agree)

I am an Indian living in Paris, and i speak bit French. I can put a bit of context on why the French guy said "I am agree " instead of "I agree". In french to verbally signify agreement the phrase used is "Je suis d'accord" which translates word by word as "I am agree". And to and french people, don't feel shy to speak English with any English speaking people like me. We won't judge you. In fact I find it cute. P.s. i don't know if french people find it cute when we make mistakes while speaking french. 😁😁

The literal translation from French is "I am in agreement (with you)". That is what it literally means. Italians make the same mistake: they say "sono d'accordo", which is identical to "je suis d'accord".

I am not French but French is my main language. The percentages of French saying "I am agree" is incredible :o Never heard someone saying "I am agree" here (Belgium) but unlike in France, we are taught very young to learn and think in multiple languages.

In French you say "Je suis d'accord" which means "I am of accord(in agreement)" word by word. We also say "I agree" as "I am of accord" in Romanian as well. Maybe all Latin languages have this issue, idk. But if you wanna translate stuff word by word, indeed misunderstandings are guaranteed to happen.

Conditions for making sentences: S + V The word "agree" is a verb. So, it is different from such words as happy, at school, etc. Therefore, "I agree" is enough. The two words already fulfill the conditions for making sentences. If we insisted on adding "be" (am, is, are; was, were), there would be two verbs which are in a row and which are not seperated by "to"...and that is wrong grammatically.

One thing that I have noticed is that French people, and maybe other foreigners, who speak very good English often use the word "economical" instead of the word "economic". For example, "political and economical problems". The right word is "economic". There is a word "economical" as in the sentence "the car does n't use much fuel. It is very economical". However apart from that, "economical" is not often used. You can't go wrong if you always use the word "economic" even when talking about the fuel consumption of a car.

Exactly like the americans, but the americans speak english haha. It's even often frowned upon to share our live for english or anglo-saxon societies. 47% of french speakers say " i am agree" . Really ? I'd be happy to know where that figure comes from. I have a lot french friends ( as french as me) who speak a mediocre english. Nonetheless, i have never heard them doing such a mistake. I must add that to do such a mistake would be rather strange considering that we have the verb "agréer" (actually, it is more than likely that "to agree" comes from the french "agréer") that as a very close meaning. And we don't say "je suis agrée" but "j'agrée". It is also quite unlikely that a french diplomat would make such a mistake. Because to become a diplomat in France, you have to pass an entrance examination where an excellent knowledge of english is mandatory. I think that the average of french diplomats at the UN undoubtedly have a level of knowledge of english grammar that is clearly higher than the average of australian and american diplomats. Accent is another story.
