This was invaluable for my low D single horn (German-made). It has a 14" bell and was very unstable in the high range until I took your advice. It's an antique valved horn that apparently was common at one time for playing march music.

Great video, even for a newbie horn player like myself. ❤

Thanks for this clear instructive video. Yesterday I tried out the hand position recommended and was astounded at the results. I instantly found I had a better sound, better intonation on both horns and especially in the high register (was previously a little flat) and the notes felt more secure. I was previously playing with the back of my fingers against the back of the bell.

Life saver! Playing horn now feels like playing a recorder or something like that! Sometimes it’s just so easy that it is unreal!

A most important presentation of Horn hand usage. A must for all Horn instrumentalists.

Thanks for posting. I'll try that. I too was taught from the instruction of Merewether, to use a straight hand against the back of the bell.

This simply isn't taught at schools I've been to, but is likely taught at places like Rice. I've been taught by many advanced horn teachers but I've never seen this before. Thank you for your addition to the horn world!!!

Really helpful video, but not for the obvious reasons. To make a long story short, I tried using some of this information on my very hateful Couesnon Tenor Cor and it works! I had always been under the impression that hand techniques weren't applied to these types of instruments, but I can dramatically improve the range just by having my hand deeper in the bell. The sound is not particularly amazing, but it's not an instrument with great potential.

Some really cool things to consider when playing your horn or OTHER horns. Thank you for some insight Engelbert! See you soon.

Thank you so much for making this video (especially in English!). One question: do you rest your thumb on the top of your index finger, or does it lay parallel? The drawing of the hand position shows the thumb parallel. It appeared that you have the thumb on top though.

6:50 I wonder if this is evidence of the hand being used much earlier than what is traditionally accepted as fact. The early designs in the baroque period did have flares with very narrow throats, but I feel that the widening of the bell flare in later instruments from the same period is evidence of more advanced technique. Also, if the sharpened harmonics of the unassisted natural horn were as terrible back then as they are today (and they obviously were, says physics), there is no reason that the composers of the time would have blown right over them like they weren't even there. They wrote with only the natural harmonics because the distinction between horns and trumpets was either not fully known, or because the traditional sound of the natural (or possibly vent-assisted) trumpet was being reflected in the horn. I also doubt that in a century of horn playing there was NOBODY who experimented with things inside the bell. And the baroque period was not some stone-age wasteland lacking in any knowledge of wave theory, either The engineers behind the great baroque organs knew very well how to apply physics and wave theory to their instruments' construction, and they also knew the mathematics behind tones and tubes. I'm telling you, these people knew what they were doing, and the horn players of the period could have VERY possibly made an excellent use of their otherwise useless right hand.
