how do people distinguish between either their brother/their brothers. You pronounce it the same, and if one doesn't know if they have 1 or 2 brothers, how do they still understand which one it is?

by notre or nos, if they say notre frere the notre means its singular but nos freres the nos means its plural ( since notre and nos are pronounced differently

This is more difficult than Spanish possessives in that Spanish just uses one possessive regardless of the noun's gender. Ex: mi comida (f), mi perro (m). So in French that would be: ma repas, mon chien. Is that right? I haven't memorized the French genders very well yet, but now I see how vital it will be to know them well!

It's somewhat similar to portuguese, so the concept is easier for the lusophones. I guess most feminine words in French finish with 'e', except when -isme, -age e -ège.

I think the words sont (are) and est (is) in the sentence help distinguishing between having 1 or more than 1 brother. eg: " leurs freres sont (are) gentils." or 'leur frere est (is) beau!"
