All the small kinks of sitting still in a museum for many decades sorted out, and the brass polished. A marked improvement.

I also am here from the proper people video. I grew up with the Pine Creek railroad, narrow gauge public park railway. They ran a small steam engine, No. 26, captivated me as a kid. When you were steaming up that pump building and had all that vintage lighting lit, it was beautiful. I build vintage tube amplifiers for electric guitar and you’ve inspired curiosity in me for vintage industrial lighting so thanks for coming in today Oh yeah, subscribed

Man this guy is a force of nature. I've been in the A.E.Karnes rabbit hole for 2 days and it is amazing. The man is a living encyclopedia of steam power engineering. Every video where he is on a tangent you will hear him rattle off advanced theories of operation and the reason that design or device exist so concisely you can understand it. I'm amazed. Oh and the size of machines he comfortably restores! My goodness it's truly a blessing he is on this planet at this point in time.

Just came from the ProperPeople video and I want to thank you for sharing your passion for these machines with us and helping to keep them alive for future generations. I saw that that video was over an hour before I started and expected to get bored and skip through it or just quit early. I was mesmerized through the whole thing because of your enthusiasm and knowledge combined with the great videography and editing. Felt like it was only 20 minutes. If someone was smart they'd make you the host of a series. A sub to your channel was of course a no brainer and I'm looking forward to watching all the videos you've posted in the past. All the best to you in the future! P.S.- loved this video too, a truly beautiful engine.

It’s beautiful how quiet it is. I have a couple Linotypes and often when people see them the first thing they say is “oh it must be so loud”. It seems there’s an assumption that all machines in the past were deafeningly loud. I have to explain to them that it’s mostly silent, and when it runs it makes a few clunks and ticks, and that’s it.

@@AEKarnes I don’t know how to provide my contact information but I am in the St. Louis area. Unfortunately the majority of our historic steam-driven goodies are long gone. I was there the day they destroyed the De La Vergne steamer at the Armour meat packing plant. It’s in pieces in Greenville Illinois now.

Is there a simple way to estimate the torque/speed/power characteristics of a single cylinder steam engine given the piston diameter, displacement, output shaft + flywheel, etc? Maybe a document out there on the internet that you know of? Thanks for any help.
@AEKarnes
@AEKarnes 11 ай бұрын
Yes and it is as old as the steam engine itself. PLAN/33,000. P= mean effective pressure over the stroke, which you get by an instrument called a steam indicator. L = length of stroke. A = piston area. N= number of power strokes per unit time. 33,000 is the power coefficient. 33,000 foot-pounds per minute = one horsepower. On a multiple cylinder engine beit compound or simple expansion you run this equation once per cylinder.
@mrsentinel4911
@mrsentinel4911 11 ай бұрын
@@AEKarnes Thanks you; however, what happens when you don't have instrumentation, like a mechanical indicator as you say, to estimate the mean effective pressure over the stroke? Can you think of a way to just eyeball the minimum and maximum based on the physical dimensions of the system and known steam pressure inputs and unloaded output shaft/flywheel conditions? I agree that some type of instrumentation is necessary, especially for a electronic analog or numerical control system type of application which I intend to implement as soon as I understand what they heck I'm doing.

Hello Alex. I recently found out about you through the Proper People's video on the Woburn Water Works. I just wanted to say that you've really re-ignited my passion in old industrial technology from when I was younger. My love for steam locomotives never wavered, but I'm getting back into other marvels of that age, as well as starting to appreciate other things I hadn't before, like the lighting technology you briefly touched on in that video. I've particularly been stunned by your art and sketches, as I've always liked to draw old machinery and industries. Thank you for sharing your passion with us.

Alex, Have you considered doing a "masterclass" type of thing on steam engines? The knowledge you possess is unfathomable. Growing up in North Carolina, I was very fascinated to learn how steam locomotives worked (More than just the simple principles). Even by going to local libraries and before the boom of the internet, it was very difficult to find literature on the mechanics of steam engines. Anyways, I know that I'd be interested if you started a Patreon or something similar where I could donate to you and also learn more about these beasts. Just saying... 😁
@AEKarnes
@AEKarnes Жыл бұрын
That is exactly my plan. I do these already informally for anyone interested, but to do it as a business I'd need a larger library of operational equipment, and to do it essentially under the table. I do need some kind of income yes I just hope a patreon or something like it would be viable.

@@AEKarnes Even using your own illustrations and diagrams would be awesome. Another option might be to crowd fund your coverage of different equipment. You could have a poll of what your audience would like to see you cover, and then set a goal on one of the crowd funding websites. By using something like GoFundMe, a met goal would cover your travel, lodging, meals, any museum or individual access fees, and money for your pocket. (I'm not trying to be pushy I swear lol. Just thinking of ideas.) Where can I find your artwork that's for sale and do you have any links for receiving donations?

I must say, i am absolutely fascinated by you and your work, it's not often that you find someone of this caliber focused on something like this so well. Absolutely some of my favorite work of the recent years. Though i must say, even though unrelated, at the woburn waterworks, you brought up the record keeping and some additional paper work there. Has it occurred to you or someone else yet that archiving that digitally would be a worthwhile endeavor? Not only to preserve the original but also make it accessible to others who can't make it down there. And also make it accessible to others without the possibility of degrading the original copy. I know for a fact i would pour over some of those records just to see whats in them as well as appreciate it. I'm sure there would be someone around that area, or someone willing to head down there in order to do some archival work, stuff like that is invaluable when it comes to archiving. Especially considering the focus of it. Old records like that just don't really exist all that often unfortunately.
