Food and wine aren't the only stellar exports from France. Pamela Druckerman, author of "Bebe Day by Day: 100 Keys to French Parenting," says parents in France have a much different outlook on raising kids. She shares her best tips for healthier and happier kids with Dr. Manny

I worked at a French school in NYC. The kids whose parents were French were better behaved than the others. You tell them to move, they move. You tell them "that's enough let someone else have a turn" and they do it. I suspect that by teaching baking to kids, you teach them patience.

Basic rules for French parenting: 1/ a meal is a meal, you eat like your parents. There is a single meal for the whole family. 2/ You must try everything but you're allowed not to like some things. You have to test at least 3 times. 3/ For a baby at night, wait at least 30 seconds before taking him in your arms to see if the baby is just moving and will fall asleep again or not 4/ there is NO word in French for "snacking". Children take a "gouter" at 4 PM and ALL families in the whole country do the same thing at the same time.

In France, the child eats when he wants, if the parent does not give him food during the day, the child calls the child protection and the parents are punished!!

Mr Cracou. In France children leave school at half past four, then they take what you call "goûter". They are still at school at four.

He hit the nail on the head about modern American parents overindulging or not setting higher expectations, like they used to old school. That’s why we have so many young adults that can’t even handle it when someone has a different opinion. They think the world revolves around them.
@sandordestuch1526
@sandordestuch1526 2 жыл бұрын
Not young adults, but children. On the other hand, parenting in America is much harsher and more authoritarian than in France. In America there is Texas, Alabama, Missouri and I could list them for a long time. Surely you are not comparing the North-East coast with France?!

I grew up free range, but with responsibility within the family. Kids had to fit in the family and community. That was in the 50's when most children were not the centre of the world.

Having worked with French kids I find that they are better behaved and more polite than most British kids.Basically,these rules were the norm when I was a kid.Sad to say,it's my generation of parents who have let things slide!

But do children behave better in America than in France? I mean, American child-rearing is much more regimented and oppressive. What Pamela Duckerman said is only true for the most conservative 1% of France, or not even for them.

In short, treat the kids with respect. They are not helpless fools. You must obtain their consent to guide them. All authority comes from the consent of those over whom that authority is exercised. Otherwise, it is coercion and slavery.

You let your kids take you out of surgery??? Are you nuts? Both of my parents were GPs/Surgeons. I knew at an early age that if they were at the hospital seeing patients or operating. NOTHING and I MEAN NOTHING, would justify my calling to talk to them. And yes, they were children of immigrants.

The first thing I observed about French parenting when I lived in France is that most French adults do not do it, because they do not have children. Thus, France is is suffering a population decline. Certainly not at steep as some European nations, but it is real nonetheless. Only recent immigrant populations are replacing themselves.
@sandordestuch1526
@sandordestuch1526 2 жыл бұрын
But aren't the children in France much "worse" and "spoiled" because of the more modern and liberal parenting? I mean what Pamela Duckerman claims is a complete lie, because even here in Eastern Europe, the most conservative 2-3% raise their children so conservatively. Obviously, this is even less the case in Paris, where education is much more liberal than here or in the USA.
