After 34 days of bombing, Lebanon was partly demolished. On August 14, 2004, Israel and Hezbollah accepted UN Resolution 1701, which ended hostilities. It was at Lebanon's request that France sent 1,700 men to reinforce the Lebanese United Nations Intermediate Force, UNIFIL.
On numerous occasions, UN troops were threatened by radical Islamist groups. The reinforced UNIFIL was given the mission of accompanying and assisting the Lebanese army, based in southern Lebanon. The goal was to prohibit all weapons in the border area with Israel.
By wearing the blue beret, the soldiers became UN soldiers. The Blue Helmets possessed deterrent weapons with heavy artillery: Leclers armored tanks, and armament.
They thus regained their true authority as peacekeepers. But the real enemies of these soldiers are the mines, spread by the Israeli army. Despite the omnipresent threats and the risks of attacks, these men and women are determined to accomplish their missions.
