I love your work. I am a woodworker and I use some of your methods. I took me a long time to figure out that when you say polish to me that is shellac. Us Americans, what do we know. Your methods are improving my work.

Beautiful work and thanks for sharing! Can you explain how you filled the grain? Was it just a coat of polish with the mop, or something special with the rubber after? Thank you so much for your videos, I've learned so much.

Hello, The English Polisher After finishing my exams a week ago my parents instructed me to refinish the beams in my room (its a Victorian period house) after the previous owner had unjustifiably painted over them. After covering up my beloved Victorian desk - because it was to heavy to remove from the room - I proceeded in stripping the beams. Yesterday, I finally removed these sheets, but unfortunately the stripper has burnt through the finish, all the way down to the wood surface. Although I'm truly saddened, the prospect of doing work like on your channel is exciting! My first question is in regards to stripping the finish from the table top. Would you recommend the stripper and wire wool method for this job? Secondly, It is a particularly dark coloured desk; will a desk of this age need to be re-stained in order for the colour to be achieved before applying French Polish, or will the colour retain so long as the wood is not sanded? Love your work, and kind regards. Grant.

K I have a question, I really love the old antique look but I have an old antique dresser that I have sanded down and it is gorgeous and I really want to keep the light clean color in the french polish, do you have a clip where you do that or would I just do the things the way you did? thank you.

I have just scraped the scratches off a kitchen table top, and I do not know whether to use Oil to finish it or Polyurethene varnish. Can you help me.

After being a woodworker for 55 years, a BC Dept of Labour certified 1974 Journeyman Carpenter, finishing X number of hard & softwood pieces, I'm very much Old School, in that I cannot bring myself to trust a polymeric synthetic finish. Starting with actual wood not having been treated before is the best option. It's difficult to remove every bit of a previous finish without affecting the new outcome, even if it's only in a very small way. The end grain absorbs finishes at a different rate than the top, for example, so you can see the difference. But if you're willing to accept these limitations, you can get a great new finish by starting w/an oil-based product; they soak in to nourish woods. It's best to use boiled linseed oil & real pine turpentine, though it costs more initially. So little turpentine is used on one project, you'll spread the cost over several of them. Boiled linseed oil MUST be diluted 50/50 or more with turps; I often cut it to 25% of the initial application, that's 1 cup linseed in 3 cups turps. Do work in a heated a room, perhaps the same as your house, to ensure the wood is stabilised. If you have to relocate the table to a colder workshop, leave it for 72 hrs before starting. Use a 16-inch fan at an open window to help exhaust fumes; this will help dry each application. After the initial application, if you've a colour in mind, now is the time to put it in following applications. The reason I don't in the initial coat is if a client decides to change colour, it's easier for me to go back to that 1st layer. Ensure adequate drying btwn coats; a fan will help that. NEVER put a coat over one not dried to your touch: you should be able to run your hand smoothly over each coat w/o any tackiness. While most people apply each coat with a cloth or brush, if you'll spend the time, you're best off with 000 steel wool. When our retail business was slow during Winter in the early 1980s, I'd buy a new Golden Oak kitchen table and finish it doing the procedure exactly as I've outlined. At the end of the 1st week, you'd swear you could see into the wood half an inch! Yes, this will be a very slow time for you, but you'll come to experience a meditation on woodworking. The last coat should be hand polishing with bee's wax, two or 3 coats are better. I do not use power tools in any of this, even though I have them on hand.
