FRENCH PRONUNCIATION LESSON - Y, YM, YN

French pronunciation lesson. Learn how to pronounce the French letter Y, including when it occurs with other letters to form new vowel sounds. Have you ever wondered, for example, when the letters YN should be pronounced as a vowel sound as opposed to two distinct sounds? This French lesson will answer these questions for you and much more. OK but when would I pronounce Y as ee or if its by itself I would pronounce it as eegrek?

"i-grec" is just the name of the letter. It's never pronounced like that within a word.

@@LubaLuba1 what she's trying to say is that you only pronounce it as "i-grec" when you're either reciting the alphabet or referring to it in some way _ e.g., "the y in the word Ypres is pronounced like ee, as in see", translated as "le i-grec dans le mot Ypres se prononce ee, comme see." But as part of speech, it's never pronounced "i-grec", even when used by itself as a pronoun.

@@LubaLuba1 and also, just as in English, it's pronounced differently depending on the word and where it's placed withing the word and whether it's followed by a vowel or consonnant. But it's usually either like the ee in see or the "y" in yellow. "les yeux", the eyes, is an exception.

I don’t understand when to pronounce the Y as “e-grek.” Is it only in sentences like this where it’s used as a standalone word instead of just a letter of the alphabet - such as: « Si tu vas à la gare demain matin, tu m'y emmèneras ? »
