French reservoir protest: VIOLENT CLASHES between police and protesters | WION Climate Tracker

During a protest against irrigation reservoirs in the rural community of Sainte-Soline, thousands of environmental activists in Western France got into a physical altercation with police. The local public prosecutor's office recently reported that 28 police officers were hurt, two of them badly injured. At the same time, seven injured protesters received medical attention from emergency personnel, three of them were regarded as life-threatening crises and hospitalized.

So why don't they want more water and fish? I wish my Utah had built more reservoirs so I could have reservoirs to go fishing. The thing is air and water pollution are very serious out of control disasters whether you're trying to breath or go enjoy the outdoors.

It takes much of the water away from nature which is already doing very poorly with the current droughts and then use it in favor for very large scale farming which also has it's serious impact on nature.

Those reservoirs are meant only for the big industrial farmers, making this water less available for other farmers and citizens. The water pumped into those reservoirs comes from underground water that replenishes during autumn and winter. They want to pump this water out during those seasons, knowing that the past autumn and winter has been one the dryest ever, and leave the water exposed to the elements to be used for crops if necessary during summer. The crops we are talking about are meant to be exported, think corn and whatnot. Not to feed the population or extinguish fires, which have become common events in the past years. Tell me, what happens to water that doesnt flow during long hot summer days ? 1st, it EVAPORATES into the air. 2nd, it can easily become fertile grounds for all kind of microscopic life, making it unfit for any kind of use, even watering crops. The protestors, who are also farmers, are protesting for alternative water retention. Not for no retention. Making a hole in the ground, cementing it and putting a pump isn't a solution, it's a bandaid that could exacerbate water access. And all the while the government asks for its citizens to reduce all water usage, all energy usage while they used to have almost unlimited power in the shape of nuclear power plants (as a bonus : the price of electricity is indexed on the price of coal which France barely uses, thanks to europe and the strain on oil with the ukraine war this net producer of electricity pays now pays it's own electricity at a premium, set by the european zone), and for its citizens to work longer and of course accept inflation with glee. What France is protesting is the first and foremost the lack of vision, being asked to kneel to finance, and not being properly consulted in a democratic way. Research the use of 49.3 article in the past year, you'll be amazed.

@@lw1zfog That was an old science fiction idea that's probably becoming a real thing. Egypt and Ehthiopia might war one day over the Nile River and Ehtiopia's Great Rennesaunce Dam. Then in America, there is conflict over the Colorado River which supplies the water for much of America's agriculture. Food is getting really expensive.
