In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the Pondicherry freedom struggle. Pondicherry was ruled by the French. In 1954, Varadarajulu Subbiah and other Pondicherry revolutionaries liberated it from the French government. On 1st November 1954, Pondicherry was transferred to India. Minor correction: Yanam is not adjacent to pondicherry, it's almost 800km north of pondicherry surrounded by Andhrapradesh. It's 150km from Visakhapatnam. A trivia it is still administered by Pondicherry UT.

It was the part of accession treaty that any person born to this day, will be given French citizenship if same is sought by that person. I have few of my colleagues working for French mnc who migrated to France from Pondicherry or Puducherry.
