If you haven't watched the entire video, here's a recap: Dimash made a few mistakes (very few), but he also sometimes sounds like a native French speaker, which for someone who doesn't speak French is incredible. Actually a later performance of this song (Slavic Bazaar performance) improves his French, dropping the ending s on vis and meurs. However one time I got into a heated discussion with some French-speaking people and their main issue seemed to be with his pronunciation of haut, which a lot of the lines of lyrics end with, and thus sustained with the vowels. You didn't appear to have any issue with haut, so I'm wondering if those people were actually French.

I've been a long time Dimash follower but this fandom is slowly getting out of hand. Here's a french teacher reacting to Dimash singing a french song, of course his french is going to be up for debate. Ever since the KPop stans made their way to Dimash content, we have this almost surreal envoirement where you are not allowed to critique a single thing he does. Even Dimash himself would never claim to speak french on a native speaker level, yet his stans pretend he does. If you would have watched the whole video without shutting it down after 1 minute because you couldn't handle the fact that a french native speaker DARED to imply Dimash did some mistakes, you would have realized that this women is actually giving him PRAISE. She literally says that he sounds like a native speaker on numerous occasions. Excuse my language but I'm slowly getting sick and tired of this behaviour. And now listen to me, Dimash is amazing, quite possibly the best singer of our time, but this man is not some puppet you can dress up the way you want. This guy is dignity incarnate, he expresses music on a artistic level, yet here we are calling ourselves "dears" like we are 10 year olds. If this man is truly your idol, then behave accordingly to what he is showing you. If you find yourself at a place where you think seeing Dimash wearing bunny ears would be a good thing, I'd beg you to rethink your choices. Once again, THIS WOMEN IS PRAISING HIM, stop acting like a child throwing tantrums and watch the whole video first. Sorry, had to get it off my chest.

You are making a "Judgement" on the people commenting in a way that you disagree with. Those same commentators are making a "Judgement" on this Teacher. @@donny1960 You're sadly missing a point bud, I'm not disagreeing with their comments, because they are pointless to begin with. When people come in here and leave after watching 1 minute of the video claiming that she is bashing Dimash, they are just plain wrong. There's no opinion to make, that statement in itself is just flat out wrong. Claming the teacher bashes Dimash can't work. since it is something that never happened. Disliking this video because of an assumption that you never cared to verify is the type of toxic behaviour "dears" sadly use on a daily basis. In that sense my "right" to get upset does indeed stand above theirs, since theirs is based on nothing but their own twisted reality. They are essentially lying, disliking this lady's video and making her life miserable for no reason other than being absolute morons. @@donny1960 Are you somehow challenged? Where I know it from? Common sense. Look at the countless comments proving my point aswell as the like / dislike ratio. All this women did was to react to his french, so for what reason - if not for her doing what she did - are people disliking the video? What does the talk about buzz words even contribute? People dislike because they think she critiques his french, if you watch the video entirely you realize that she does quite the opposite. So what other thing can you say about the dislikes except for them being plain wrong? I can go further if you want, the people that dislikes this video are nothing but malicious literal filth. Anything that doesn't even remotely fit their agenda gets downvoted to oblivion, since they are too lazy to even seek to verify whether their point is even legit to begin with. Because they are little ignorant twats. That's the problem with KPop stans. They are inherently children and if I were to go to any Kpop video now and claim that Dimash sing better than any of those "idols", I'd still find countless idiots trying to prove me wrong. That program resumes on Friday, June 4 (5-8 pm New York time, calculate your time zone differences) and we need to show up in large numbers in order to protect Dimash's position at the top. Simply type REQUEST DIMASH as many times as possible in the chat during the three hour program. The artist who gets the most requests gets two music videos played while others get just one or none. Dimash had sung this song many times before this competition and didn't pronounce the 's' in vis, etc. He learns foreign-language lyrics phonetically and later commented that he made these mistakes because he was so nervous. It was the first time The Singer competition show allowed a foreigner from outside China to compete and invited Dimash to participate in just 2 episodes as they thought he wouldn't make it any further by being voted off by the audience. (That didn't happen; he lasted through the whole season and came in second.) With SOS, Dimash ended up being the 1st person to perform on the 1st episode. He was in a foreign land at the age of 22, didn't speak their language, and was the youngest contestant out of the native professional and popular singers ever to perform on the show. I understand that your analysis is driven by language pronunciation, but as with most Dimash fans, I've watched every interview and video available on Dimash. We know he didn't make the most glaring mistakes you noted either before or after this particular performance. I know you don't expect most foreigners to speak perfect French and your analysis was great for someone learning the language. It's just tough to hear about our dear Dimash who makes the effort to learn songs in 12 different languages to please his fans. Not many vocalists do that, and we love him for it. All the best. :-)

Merci, Marie! Dimash performed this song many times before and after this one, and he always pronounced “vis” and “ris” correctly. Why did he then mispronounce them here? As an amateur singer, I have found that when I’m particularly nervous about a performance (quand j’ai le trac), my conscious mind totally freezes and only old memories surface. So for Dimash, this performance being his first one in China, and since it was vital for him to score well in the first two episodes in order not to be eliminated, he was quite nervous. I assume that is why old mistakes he might have made when he first learned the song resurfaced here. Toward the end of the song, he became more confident, and you might have noticed that he pronounced the last “vis” correctly. Then, we see him leak out a tiny smile when he realized he had totally mesmerized the audience.

👉 This is the song of the songs for Dimash and us, his Dears. (This is what Dimash calls us fans.) This song comes from the famous Canadian-French rock opera 'Starmania' 1978, well known in French-speaking countries) and is one of the most difficult songs to sing and made Dimash a mega-star overnight. In 2017 Dimash received a wild-card for the competition “The Singer” in China. He was the youngest participant of all time (22 years) and the first non-Chinese. Only professional, award-winning singers take part. Nobody knew or hear Dimash before and he also had to start first... and after this song Dimash captured the hearts of millions of viewers overnight. The next day, bodyguards stood at his door. The competition consisted of 14 rounds, over 4 months. The jury consists of 500 spectators. With up to 1 billion people see this tv-program, that's generated international interest. The performances were uploaded to KZbin... and so, we became Dimash’s Dears. The Chinese organizers planned that Dimash would survive two episodes of the competition and go home again. They didn't really believe in him. But Dimash came, sang and stayed... for the next 3 years in China... but he only finished second in the competition because he's not Chinese (conditions have changed: The next year, Jessie J. won).🌼🇩🇪 👉 In January 2021 Dimash was one of the few foreigners who has been asked to attend the live online show marking the inauguration of the President of U.S.A. Joe Biden. He is here as a representative of his country Kazakhstan and he is also here for his Dears from all over the world. He performed: S.O.S. - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXaQapmHiausl9U and Samaltau - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX3Vd6ZmjLernbs 🌼🇩🇪

Merci. A.P. Québec, Canada

@@JustFrenchIt Canadian French is ambiguous. There are many regional differences: the Maritimes have a dialect called Acadian (much older dialect), Québec is also regionalized with La ville de Québec having possibly the “purest” pronunciation, Montréal has possibly a more international feel to it: Gatineau has a very distinct accent called “Joyale” and is almost incomprehensible: Ontario has Franco-ontariens and is closer to Montréal. Problem becomes that outside of Québec, all the French teachers are basically speaking original French. Either Parisian or Belgium. I had a French teacher in high school from Belgium who criticized one of my best friend’s French because her parents were Parisian. As an Anglo who speaks French, I speak less of a dialect and closer to Franco-ontarienne. The western parts of Canada barely ever become bilingual because French is less used in the West. The most obvious anomaly noted was the “vise/rise” vs “vis/ris”. The last word “do” always bugs me just a bit because it sounds more like “du” to me, but I forgive it because of the vocal prowess. Honestly, the Acadian is more like the patois that moved to New Orléans.

@@JustFrenchIt worthy of more investigation I’m sure. The French language laws in Québec don’t allow the language to be altered at all, so in Canada, there are a lot of literal translations such as “chien chaud” instead of “hot dog”, not sure what is being used internationally for “computer”, but in Canada, we’re only allowed to use “ordinateur” (exception being Franco-ontariens who’ll use a complex “Frenglish” to simplify speech to the quickest form.)

For a singer who puts so much emphasis on sincerity, getting details like pronounciation right is really important - which he knows. It's about respect for the composition and the listener.

@@Ozymandi_as I understand that correct pronunciation equals sincerity and respect from your perspective. I get that. And as far as singing MJ's songs, same, they do sound hard to understand. But by the same token, I don't understand the words that Ariana Grande is singing in her songs, or Toni Braxton in Another Sad Love Song (which I love), and they are singing in their own language. But because we know that they speak English, they are given the benefit of the doubt that they are stylistically choosing to mispronounce. MJ's songs are faster, making it doubly difficult to sing and pronounce. Also, I don't understand all the words either. Sometimes I have to play guessing games to figure out what English singers are singing in English. Nevermind the metal singers whose words I really can't make out. Does this mean that they are insincere or disrespectful? I think of the song Never Enough and how the original singer says, "for me" with the E in ME sounding like "mehy" rather than me (like "mi" in do re mi). At least Dimash has a reason to mispronounce. And the fact that he still sings it well, and states the words somewhat "good' as this teacher states, should teach us some empathy for the effort and hours of work that goes into singing with sincere emotions and with integrity to the intent of the song.

Thank you for this, Marie. I was very interested in your analysis because as a native English speaker (American) I have noticed Dimash's English pronunciation from this era (as of my comments, 6 years sgo) needs a lot work. Before anyone yrashes me for that comment, let me explain. I'm 63 years old, I have sung in school and community choirs since I was 8, I have never sung professionally. Anyone with choral experience knows we sing a wide range of languages. In college I was fluent in German, I had one year of college French. I have sung in English, medieval English (don't remember if Old English or Middle English) German, French, Spanish,, Portuguese, medieval Portuguese, Latin (classical, ecclesiastical, medieval latin from France, Italy, Germany and England--all have their own variations), Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, Russian, a couple of African languages, a no doubt a few languages I can't recall. Choral scores come with pronunciation guides. We are expected to learn correct pronunciation to the best of our abilities. We also have translations so we understand what we are singing. Pronunciation is not always straightforward:. as a soprano, when singing in my upper range, I am often told to distort certain vowel pronunciations so that they SOUND correct to the audience. With that background, my reaction to Dimash's videos from 6 years ago are that as he becomes internationally known, he needs better vocal coaches in the myriad languages he sings in. From his more recent videos he has had that. Musicians are usually good at learning foreign language pronunciation because their musicality gives them greater ability to hear linguistic nuances. Any pronunciation issues Dimash has in languages he did not grow up with, will be coaching issues. As his international audience expands, his ability to access better coaching will do so as well.

Of course the likelihood of Dimash nailing this song perfectly was not likely, I agree with you that the performance was indeed "epic" :) I found it really interesting to hear your explanations on the "mistakes" and is really helpful for one who is looking to improve their French speaking or indeed singing! To those thinking that Marie was criticising Dimash I would strongly disagree and her following comments throughout the video confirm this was not the case: "Pronunciation is good" "if I was listening to this without knowing where he came from, I don't think I would know this person does not speak French" "He's epic" Marie is clearly loving this performance! "Pronunciation is perfect!" "I can't hear an accent" Just a few of my thoughts, thanks for sharing as always :)

@@JustFrenchIt I am glad you watched, yes he is phenomenal, very highly educated and extremely well read. He went to a music school for gifted children, and in his normal schooling was always an A student. He is a natural philosofer, genius level so he will always strive for perfection. He us a worldwide phenomenon and has millions of devoted fans in almost every country of the world, in fact has fan clubs in 120 countries. I count myself as one devoted fan or Dear as he calls us as he says we are all as dear to him as his family and ge really means it. He us a well bred, well bought up, polite, elegant, patriotic and extremely modest and humble. Very grounded despite his fame, he is incredible and soon he will have his doctorate, he plans to teach and will open his own singing academy in the future. Thank you for the video and this chat, you are very nice 💖💖💖

The song was written and sung by a French Canadian. Would that have any bearing on why the pronunciation is not traditionl?
