I'm not sure that the candidates that withdrew thought through their actions. If I had voted for a candidate who got to the second round and then withdrew, I would consider that they had wasted my vote, and if they didn't want to go all the way they shouldn't have stood in the first place. What we saw in France is exactly what happened in the UK, first past the post voting without any proportional representation, made even worse by the fact that there are 2 rounds of voting which can allow parties in the second round to pull candidates in a Machivellian power grab. The Right got 37% of the vote in the second round, that is nearly 40% and they came in third?? It has become obvious that the argument for a "first past the post" voting system producing more political stability, is another myth, like the rules based international order which somehow always seems to benefit the United States. Stability in this political context means maintaining the status quo and ensuring the same people that ran the government before the elections will run it after the elections. In fact the more incompetent the politicians elected to office like Boris or Macron, the easier the job for the Establishment (aka Deep State) to run the country and continue to escalate wars nobody wants as well as continue the unprecedented transfer of wealth from the middle classes to the super rich via fiat currencies, inflation, copyright law, tax havens and regulatory loopholes for Hedge Funds.
