What is extraordinary is that the chateau was saved and not destroyed during the revolution. And of course the subsequent world wars. It begs to be saved and have new life breathed into it.

Which life ? Who wants to live in a castle apparts from people who never experienced it and imagine that it is great. Living in a castle is very impractical. Even if you run it as a hotel/historical monument/event location competiting with other castle will be a real challenge. There is a reason why this castle is for sale: It is crap (Compare to the ton of other castle available in France)

"So full of history", exactly... But, after renovation, one's taxes in Frances new system become crippling, since the French are taxed on the value of assets, not income. The more you do your duty to history, duty to art, beauty - really, to the world - by restoring true French history in this marvelous chateau, the more you will be punished and unable to continue to look after it. Makes my heart heavy to see places like this on the auction block.

Mary Clingman would need to see that tub in person to decide but I don’t believe they made tubs that big in the 20th century. Now the outside of the tub was painted the same as the wall and that was done ALOT in the US during the late 20s and 30s to spiff up older or damaged tubs. The French had their own monetary issues during that time so my guess would be the tub was much older and when plumbing was updated the tub got a coat of paint. That tub was either new old stock lol or an very old tub. The other fixtures are 20s most likely because by the time of financial recovery France was recovering from WWII

@@jorgegomez524 Hi . . I've just come across this site again and saw your unanswered question! Yes, Lucie and her husband Frederic loved Le Bouilh but they mostly lived at Versailles where she was a lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette and her father in law was the Minister of war. They returned to Le Bouilh after the elder Comte was guillotined but found the chateau sealed and the furniture plundered . Frederic remained in hiding on the property (with a loyal staffer) while Lucie, the children and their nanny etc lived in Bordeaux and arranged their voyage to North America. When the family returned to France, Lucie was invited to join the court of Napoleon and the Comte de Gouvernet became a diplomat. They later settled in Italy and never returned to Le Bouilh and the chateau passed to a different branch of the family.

Yes, this property has been maintained over the years. What we meant by 'untouched' is that no major changes were made to the architecture and you can still find the original furniture, paintings, books, etc. 😉And the dust is there, believe us...

Look again...the large tables are very dusty just layers, they don't shine. On the Grand Staircase is white/gray stains on the steps from bird droppings sitting on the large paintings. Look at the huge painting again as he comes down the steps....the bird droppings are more noticeable at the bottom of the frame from where the birds sat. So sad! Probably a broken window for awhile before care taker noticed. Wonder WHY not cleaned and dusted before placed for sale? Did owner die and the Trustee - Executor thinks that it shows its age (unchanged 1789) better if dirty? Wish they explained when it was last lived in from day to day. Probably was a Country Home in the last 100 years.....

Tres magnifique if I won the lottery I’d buy it and spend the rest of my life exploring everything , all I’d then change was the electricity , water , then keep it maintained . This is far too beautiful and far too historical to change , it should be kept as is , for everybody to admire .

The WALLPAPER or Painting below the Chair Railing on the 2nd Floor in the Hallway reflects its ancient age....so stunning and rare design..appears to be late 1700 to early 1800's! Many of the ceilings are peeling and have flaked off onto the floor in several of the 1st rooms, such as the 1s Blue Room there is a stripe of WALLPAPER hanging loose. Sure would like to know the last time someone spent the night!? Let's hope the furniture, paintings and accessories STAY in the Chataue FOREVER.

The longer it sits the more degraded it will get. Someone will purchase it, sell the antiques for millions and then fill it with reproductions to pay for the upkeep and then probably turn it into a hotel. The government obviously doesn’t want it.
@uberglamazon

@@Lafeolamom Do you have any idea what French property taxes are like? Or the bare bones cost of running that place? We won't even discuss the millions and millions to make the place habitable. There are only 5 bathrooms now...sadly it is now a white elephant and the only way it would make sense is for a developer to turn it into apartments and even then they would probably be massively expensive and overpriced for the area.

Don't let your heart be bogged down by this. Nothing is permanent. Sure it's an historic treasure, but remember it rose on the backs of extremely oppressed people, whom the French aristocracy didn't regard as citizens, built just 3 years before the Revolution (1786?). The planet is filled with ruins and we simply can't save them all. If fate has force, then fate determines what should and will happen to this property. Get some friends and family together and find a project to save and that will be more satisfying than anything else you do.

This is stunning! I am from America and we don't have too many places like this and what we did have was torn down and the same goes for the UK, a lot of their mansions and castles we blown up because they either fell into ruin or the upkeep was too much. It would take several millions of dollars to restore this on top of being not being rich but super-rich because the taxes will eat you alive on a place like this. The first thing that would need to be fixed is the foundation followed by the floors, roofing, any electrical wiring, plumbing, ceilings, and walls. You can tell the floors are in very bad shape because the squeaking comes from the natural settling and age, but the crunching sound is from dry rot/termites or both

If I bought it, I wouldn't do anything to modernize it other than put electric in, but use low wattage, low UV lighting to preserve the color of the paint, then I would restore the original paintwork. I would put a kitchen and bsthroom, but make it a seperate wing in the center of the arch way, and connect it through a walkway. It would match the architecture of the rest of the chatue along with the roof. To further preserve the building I would install AC, and then place UV windows to further preserve the original interior.
