Voltage was the same under no load, which makes sense. When you draw a current, the voltage will be dropped across the wire since it is acting as a low value resistor. Measure the voltage on the input of the pump and it will probably be somewhere around 7-10 volts, dropping somewhere around 3-5 volts across the extension cord.

When measuring the voltage at the distant end of the extension cord you must measure it under the full load of the pump. Otherwise there is NO current flow and your voltage will indeed be the same as the source.
@fungoorstitch3 жыл бұрын
Begging your pardon, but that's not correct. The meter initiates current flow by completing the circuit, and in this direct current application will return a value of 12.19 volts regardless of measurement location or whether the pump is operating. The variable that changes under load is amperage.
@MrDirkad3 жыл бұрын
@@fungoorstitch The impendence of the meter is more than of the pump, MUCH more. That pump pulls 18A and that extension cord is probably 16 or 18 gauge copper. I would expect an large voltage drop down the cord (200' both ways). Be careful correcting people. Scotty T may still be correct but you are wrong. Now its you with egg on your face sir.

The voltage drop occurs when current is flowing. Plug in the load and measure the voltage drop from the minus terminal on the battery to the minus lead on the pump. Then measure the voltage drop across the positive terminal of the battery to the positive lead on the pump. The pump must be running. To test for an open circuit voltage just measure across the gap between a blown fuse. If the fuse is blown the voltage will be the same as the battery. When you measured the voltage on the extension cord it is the same as an open circuit with no pump load. So, the voltage is the same as the battery. To measure the actual amount of amps the pump uses disconnect one of either lead from the battery. Switch the meter to the amps setting. Then connect the red test lead to the battery terminal and the black lead to the wire from the pump you took off from the battery. After you are finished with your measurement please install a fuse rated at twice the current draw of the pump.

Electrons work just like water, think of the inlet pipe, 1/2" works for 10' but if you want to go longer you need a bigger diameter pipe. If you want the wire more than 5' long the wire has to be bigger in diameter - bigger wire = lower number Wire gauge. I like your setup!
@frenchriversprings6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. So with a long small wire, I'm not loosing any voltage. So what am I loosing? Amps?
@MotownVideo6 жыл бұрын
When you have the long cord connected and measure the voltage at the battery then at the end of the cord the meter itself is the only "load". The meter internal resistance is most likely over 1 mega ohm (1,000,000) ohms. It draws extremely low current (amps). Try the setup again but have the pump connected and running, then measure the voltage at the battery and then also where the extension cord connects to the pump. I assure you you will have far less than 12 volts at the pump end when the "load" of the pump is running. The rest of the voltage drop occurs because of the resistance of the wire. You could improve the performance using an extension cord but the wire needs to be much larger (lower gauge number). A larger diameter wire has less resistance. Again, the meter alone draws such a small current the gauge of the wire has less effect. I just looked at seaflo website, that pump draws 17 amps. Even for a short connection you should use a minimum of 12 gauge wire to minimize voltage drop.

Great project. You can measure current by hooking your battery to the pump as you normally would but leave the positive clip off. Turn your multiple meter to read DC current, connect the negative (Black) probe to the positive clip that you left off the battery and connect the positive (Red) probe to the battery terminal. This is a series connection to measure DC current through the positive side of the circuit.

What you need to do is connect the pump through the extension cord then read your voltage AT THE PUMP WHILE IT IS RUNNING. This will tell you how much voltage you are losing to the resistance in the extension. It is good that you brought the battery to the pump. If you insisted on running 100 of wire to the pump at 12 volts, you would have been running arc welding cable. 200 feet on 00 arc cable would cost you more than running 100 feet of 10 gauge romex and a new 120 volt pump.

the reason you get less power from the battery when you have a long cable is because the longer the cable is, the more resistance the wire will produce, you might notice with high power draw it'll also get warm or hot depending on how thin the cable is, it happens with mains as well, but because it's already such a high voltage (and slightly different power type) you normally don't notice it. the way you can make the cable longer is by using a relay system, they're a bit confusing to wire, but it'll definitely work... you can also get a super thick cable, but that's way more expensive and not worth the setup you've got.

you have to connect the big consumer to power cord in order to see the voltage drop. The voltage drop is caused by the current, the length of the cord and the section of the cord. Measuring the voltage drop without the consumer results in almost zero drop voltage.

Of course. One hundred feet of cord is going to have resistance that will drop voltage, but you won't see that drop unless you load it with the pump (and draw current). Measure at the end of the cord with the pump connected to it and you will definately see the voltage loss.

I'm sure it has been mentioned before, but try a solar panel coupled with a MPPT charge controller with a timer on the pump. Totally automatic, ongoing operation. Also, the more you deplete the battery, the faster it will die. Never past 50%, and only with a deep cycle battery. A starting battery is a waste of money for something like this as it will not last.

a small solar setup wouldn't really be a "waste", all you need is a battery (which you already have), and ONE small charge controller, and ONE panel... Then you'd never have to lug the battery around to manually charge it! You could take it a step further and add a "timer" to automatically turn the pump on/off at certain times. Then you'd never have to manually charge or turn your setup on/off. Your garden would always be *automatically* watered, same time, every day!

I don’t remember what size clamp I bought. I would not recommend lighter outlet. For your cable, do not use longer than 4’ long. If you go longer the performance will be reduced. You can’t use a cable and clamp that is too big. Better oversized than undersized especially when you deal with 12volts.

You don’t understand voltage drop! Run 12v through your extension cord 100ft with the pump connected and running. Measure the voltage at the battery and then measure it at the pump. I assure you, you will get a big voltage drop and that’s why your pump doesn’t run off a 100ft extension cord. You are measuring voltage drop on the 100ft cord at no load which of course you’ll see the same voltage as the battery because there isn’t any load connected! You need to increase the wire size to decrease the voltage drop! The pump draws around 15/17 amps, the battery will not last long, you should add a solar panel and charge controller around 200watts of solar will work to make sure your battery will keep a sufficient charge when the pump is in use.
