I believe that the roots indicates how many new things you can but with the amount of cursed coins you have. Meaning that if it's at 0, then the amount you have is less than any upgrade in the tree.

Maybe the abyss doesn't like having stuff thrown at it all the time I think if you had spent your Abyss on a "boring stat boost" you could take that when you level up by spending a fruit
