The writer of the original story appears to be a female. There’s just so many twists and turns and brilliant schemes and scenes where you think it’s comical but later turns out to be very meaningful like the mandarin wings. There must have been a ton of technical advisors, too. The different sets and backgrounds and scenery, was amazing. This series deserved all the awards it got.

I never usually cry even though it's the most saddest part,I will just feel bad but I felt her emotion in this scene and cried along with her. It's so funny how the relationship between Yuen Shen and Shaoshang started. Yuen Shen was always arrogant toward Shaoshang but in the end, he ended up loving her. Shaoshang, on the other hand, always giving him cold shoulder and bicker with him. Their relationship is always odd but in reality, Yuen Shen loves Shaoshang but he is too late already because Shaoshang already fell in love with Zi Sheng. The way she misses her fiance and uses their love as the example to correct Shanjian is not only funny, but also really heartwarming. As for her father being charged with treason... maybe they just didn't portrayed it well, but it seems kinda forced. Even without any hint as to what really happened, it's really difficult to accept that an emperor who has been wise and patient throughout the series would punish his most trusted general's fiance's family due to an unconfirmed betrayal. He seems overly suspicious and refuses to listen to anyone on the matter, which are both way out of character for him... Especially when you consider that traitors in his court have been getting away with all kinds of treacherous plots all throughout this show without any suspicion or investigation.

No no no, I think you missed the core issue here. The emperor never doubted general Cheng and Yanzhong. Cheng Shaosang's dispute with the girl was just an icing on the cake. The real issue is that the aristrocratic faction wants to use Cheng general as a scapegoat to stop the reform that is presented by the emperor. The emperor wants a balance in the court, thus he had been promoting talented people to be officials. This was the reason why Cheng family could move into the capital. Cheng general was of commoner background and just promoted recently into a marquis. He even had a daughter that is lucky enough to climb onto social ladder, and with her bad reputation, that makes her father a perfect scapegoat. But he was not the real main objective of the matter. The real target is the emperor's cause. They don't want to have a court filled with more and more officials from humble background. If this plan succeed, they can use it as an excuse to say that officials from poor background is too risky of being corrupt, they are unreliable...bla bla bla... The emperor knew this all along and his ministers all demanding him to execute the Cheng general and his whole clan members right away, that's what actually make him furious and didn't even have appetite to eat... Because he knew that Chengs and Yans are innocent but he can't just pardon them using his privilege. If he can even punish his own most favourite princess with house arrest, send his old aunt to nunnery and demote his crown princess just based on unvirtuous behaviour out of jealousy... harem's issues...then it will be unreasonable if he simply sides on Cheng house who is accused of treason with those so called "existing evidence", only because he likes CSS and LBY. The only thing that can help Cheng family is to get another evidence to prove their innonence. He knew all along that the noble factions just want to stop his reform, stop promoting the poor people. But his hand is tied by the law. The only thing he can do now is the delaying tactic until they can find the real evidence. But if it's still can not be found... the farthest that the emperor can do is to leave Cheng Shaoshang alive to keep one last bloodline. Saying that CSS is a member of Ling family is actually a far fetched excuse. She is not married yet, but still the emperor is using that excuse...it's just because he loves Ling Buyi that much and he trust Cheng jia too, so he's trying to find excuses to keep her alive and not suffer. Otherwise, CSS wouldn't be that lucky. And he grounded CSS in Empress palace because he is worried that she would leave the palace and go to the warzone... how would he explain that to Ling Buyi if she finds mishap on the way. During this drama i have never cried, but when they took her family away and she said she wanted to die with them that was so deep. She has lived all these years without them. Now that she has them the thought of her losing them is heartbreaking. Family love runs very deep she wont be happy if they are gone .
