i remember sobbing the first time I watched this scene. it felt like a goodbye to Yuan Shanjian's character. the compilation of their key moments together really hurt 😭😭😭 lol then we found him chained in a random village, he was all beaten up but I couldn't stop laughing I was so happy to just see him again! 😆 he was an arrogant little shit in the beginning, but I really grew to like him as the show went on. he showed real maturity, he wasn't petty when it came to love (something I almost expected him to be) and in this post-time skip part he had accepted that he loved Shaoshang but knew that she needed a friend so he stayed by her side loyally. we all deserve to have someone like Yuan Shanjian in our lives

I don't believe that YS was totally selfless. He loved CSS and he fought for her love even though he knew that it was almost certainly a lost cause. I believe YS grew throughout the series and became less petty over time. He was never evil nor scheming but even now the thought of him risking his life to help a love rival [so CSS could find peace] is still mildly surprising to him. Give him 6 months to ponder things and incorporate new knowledge and he'd be something else indeed.

I loved all her 3 suitors for different reasons.... She ends up with the ML, but I could also see her with YS. Some people find him annoying, but I find him interesting. Love characters with a smart mind and mouth...and appreciated the banter between him and Cheng Shao Sheng.

I liked the three suitors myself although, as the author(s) wanted, I got annoyed at them getting in the ML's way :) .... The first was the kind & caring person CSS needed ; LBY loved her much more deeply AND was strong willed enough not to let her run all over him ; and YS had the patience that CSS needs. None of the suitors, IMHO, had the full package that CSS needed. HBY came the closest at the end but even he needs to continue growing to be the [near] perfect match.

This would have been a different story if he would have proposed to Shoshang right after she and A'Yao ended their engagement. Linyi on the other hand, wasted no time. Although she hadn't fallen for Linyi at the time she learned to love him. Yaun Shen could have had the same opportunity, if he didn't assume after A'yao she wouldn't have any more marriage prospects. He thought he could bide his time in offering her marriage because of it. Even though I liked Yuan Shen I always preferred Lingyi over him, because Lingyi learned his lesson the first time when she was engaged to A'Yao and he was being patient. He didn't want to risk the chance that someone else might snatch her up.

Maybe but I think that YS hadn't grown enough to make such a daring & risky move at that point. I think that he was too busy celebrating that his favorite student wouldn't get trapped in marriage to someone else -- just for LBY to trap her before she came to YS. Oddly though I think LBY was rude(uncaring?), but possibly trapped by circumstances himself, to propose to CSS so soon after she [unwillingly] broke off the betrothal.

@@erutherford He did. He never had a legal wife, but he had a concubine. In his old age, he had children and grandchildren. He remained close to the Cheng and Huo families.
