Some fun trivia about the Cutlets to Conquer the Red Dragon. The meal is based off of Tonkatsu, a Japanese dish of breaded meat cutlets (usually pork or chicken) that is deep fried. It is a very popular dish in Japan. But also, people eat Tonkatsu before a competition or challenge (like exams or sport competitions) as a form of good luck. This is because “Katsu” in Japanese also means “to win”. So Senshi making this cutlet dish was him wishing good luck to the party so that they may win and conquer the Red Dragon!

@@zebimicio5204 it’s both actually. “Ton” is pork, and “katsu” is like a shortened word for cutlet (katsuretsu). It’s one of those times in Japanese where the way they write a word, what with their complex writing system, the meaning of it changes. Katsu for “to win” is 勝つ and for “cutlet” it is カツ. The whole good luck aspect of tonkatsu is a play on words, a pun. Theres definitely a better way to explain it, but I’m not familiar with writing in Japanese enough to say further, in fear of saying something flat out wrong lol.

In dungeon meshi's worldview, elves are elves. no good elves, high elves or dark elves. any elf can be good or evil just like humans can be good or evil. And elves in this story arent some tree loving tribal ppl like other isekai anime. They have a powerful empire with very a long history. They are very arrogant towards the short-life races and consider them as inferrior, and often use other races for magic experiments, especially tallmen and halfmen. So all races in dungeon meshi hate elves Elves are basically the highest caste in this worldview

And it’s also interesting that the elf in the painting was referred to as the “jester”, the court entertainer. It makes you wonder what the world might’ve been like with elves when the castle was still in the surface. Maybe this elf was devoutly loyal to the royalty because they’ve shown kindness to them than if they were in a different royalty/kingdom. 🤔🤨

There was a side comic explaining the origin of the "dark elf" term in-universe, and it basically comes down to trying to explain why some elves act like wise and benefecent teachers to shorter-lived races, and others are evil bastards... But it turns out that the former were just the top 1% of most kind elves who did charity work for those with shorter lifespans, while the rest are ordinary people who don't care.

A fed Senshi is a happy Senshi! "Cutlets to Conquer the Red Dragon" is such a badass name for a meal you're expecting to be your last. Wonder if Senshi comes up with these himself. A band of dragonslayers in frogsuits who ate the remains of the monsters they slew would make for a pretty dope legend ngl

Katsu is also a kind of wordplay in Japanese for 'winning', so Senshi is also wishing them good luck with his dish!

15:23 I love that detail that the elf clearly did love the king and maybe the royalty by extension. The paintings could’ve just been regular paintings left to rot & wither away, there’s been entire draperies and other decorations in ruin from monsters or raiders. I’m starting to think the paintings serves two ways: one importantly to act as living photographs/time capsules of the kingdom and the other act defensively against raiders who wants to steal or defile the paintings. And it’s interesting that it’s the ELF themself being the aggressor to intruders, no knight or monster. It just makes me wonder what could’ve been the reasoning for the “mad” mage elf to sink the whole kingdom 🤔🤨

Some details regarding the reviving mechanisms in this chapter have been cut, I wonder do they plan to reveal that in the next episode. Of course this is not the only cut content but by far it is the most significant.

I noticed that too when watching. I feel like it's possible they've saved some of it for next episode considering it could be spliced pretty nicely to the upcoming fight when talking about certain attacks. I'll be a little disappointed if it isn't placed at least somewhere, because it also just has a very sweet character moment too. Otherwise the anime has been fairly accurate up until now

Dungeon meshi cover realistic fantasy racism (no ‘knife ear bastard’ but realistic assumptions some people are just kinda from ‘bad cultures’)and funny to see even people outside the fantasy fall for it. ‘It’s gotta be Dark Elves right’ what in the SAM HILL is a DARK elf? And why do they have to be dark to be evil?

I'm just a bit confused... he's connecting the dots that the dark skin elf showed in the previous painting ep could be the mad magician that made the dungeon, so I believe that was the reason he referred it as "dark elf", so it's not a baseless (racist) assumption that the mad magician might be dark skin. Or the word "dark" could just be referring to the "mad" part of the "mad magician", as in a synonym to "evil", and not the race part/skin color. Jumping straight to racism in this case might be a bit harsh and ungrounded...? I'm open to be educated and have my view updated ofc.

@@sadlypen8152they can correct me if i'm wrong, but i think alternate was just talking about this as a small example of how a lot of people react to fantasy worlds. they weren't trying to single out freshest as the only person to ever jump to dark elf vs light elf, just saying that in general fantasy worlds simplify particular narrative tropes, and alternate feels dungeon meshi gives the topic a level of nuance that they appreciate and look forward to being explored more in the show.

They do have dark elves, but only in folklore lol, short live races referred to the elves who caused damage to them or don’t want to help them as dark ones, and the elves who do charity for them as light ones. Essentially, they are just 2 opposite political parties with different ideologies in the same empire lol Not saying dark elves are bad or light elves are necessarily good, much like real political world, some dark elves consider other humans as wild animals with no intelligence, and some just don’t want to stick their hand into other people's business, and light elves are variant degrees of savior complex colonizers. Of course, these categories didn’t make it into the elven culture, so people like Marcille are pretty oblivious to this lol

Someone made a really good video about elves in scientific lens, like if they're a long lived races, there shouldn't be that much biological diversity among them (since they don't bear children that often) like the typical Dnd lore would suggest. But depending on the world-building, dark elves and high elves don't necessarily have to be sub-races, they could be the different statuses, clans or beliefs?

@@khrndr I believe Senshi's arc is a fitting spot for the end of first two season, both pace and story wise. The manga has 14 volumes total, that arc finishes right at the end of volume 7.

he had surgery a couple weeks ago. He goes in for a follow up tomorrow. Hopefully they can remove the stiches and he can be deconed.

Every single Japanese knows dragons have a Reversed Scale (GEKIRIN) under their chins and that's the weak point to defeat them ... and I assume that legend was from Greek or something but I've found out it's actually a Chinese myth and well known to only Asians. Sorry Aniki, this story isn't familiar to you.
