what's that lyric about digging "fairmont number 9" ? what does that mean, anybody know? i couldn't find the lyrics online anywhere to see if these are even the right words.

That'd be a name of a particular mine is my guess. Mannington No. 9 is another example of a killer coal minin' tune, referencing a collapsed mine in WV

Number 9 is a coal seam designation based on quality. Coal occurs in defined layers underground called seams that can run for hundreds or thousands of feet. They are separated by dirt or rock. Seams of coal are given numbers based on quality of the coal in a seam. 1 to 13, I think. Number nine is a particularly good quality coal seam. Plus it sounds good in a song lyric. Fairmont is probably the name of a mine.
